Houses by the Bridge, Orthez

Ian Strang's original etching, "Houses by the Bridge, Orthez" is printed on cream wove paper bearing the 'England' watermak and with full margins as issued in 1945 as the annual presentation plate by the Print Collectors' Club. This impression is signed in pencil by Strang in the lower right corner. It is a fine example of the landscape and architectural art created by the British artist, Ian Strang.

This etching depicts the fourteenth century bridge and its surrounding houses which spans the Gave de Pau at Orthez. The town is situated in France's south-western region of Aquitaine, forty kilometers north-west of the city of Pau. The National Gallery of Art, The Cleveland Museum of Arts, and the The Victoria and Albert Museum inlude an impression of this original etching in their collections.

Title: Houses by the Bridge, Orthez
Artist: Strang, Ian (London, 1886 - 1952)
Date: 1926 (PCC Edition, 1945)
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: Print Collectors' Club, London
Source: Print Collectors' Club (Presentation plate)
Note: Ian Strang: The son of the influential Scottish etcher, William Strang (1859-1921), Ian Strang received his formal art studies at the Slade, London, and in Paris from 1902 to 1908. Unlike the art of his father, Ian Strang was drawn early to the depiction of architectural subjects and most of his etchings concentrate upon views of buildings, both in England and on the Continent. No doubt this striking etching entitled, "Houses by the Bridge, Orthez" was influenced by a visit to Orthez.
One author writes that Ian Strang's etchings are remarkable for their "austerity". * Few of Strang's etchings contain people. When present, humanity seems almost insignificant next to the meticulous details and bold forms of the architecture. In this light, it's interesting to compare Strang with F. L. M. Griggs, another famous British architectural etcher of the early twentieth century. Somehow, perhaps through their play of light and shade and their obvious mastery of the art of etching, both artists had the rare ability to transform their architectural subjects into living entities. It is this ability which separates the art of Piranesi, Meryon, Griggs and Strang from the mere etchers of architectural 'views'.
Ian Strang was a full member of the prestigious Royal Engravers. In total, he created almost one hundred and fifty etchings. A painstaking craftsman, Strang both etched and printed most of his work. This original Ian Strang etching entitled "Houses by the Bridge, Orthez" was originaly published by the artist in 1926 and was re-issued as a presentation plate by the Print Collectors' Club (PCC). This impression is printed on cream wove paper bearing the 'England' watermak and with full margins as published in 1945.
The Print Collectors' Club was established in 1921 by the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (R.E.) a society founded in 1880 at the instigation of Sir Francis Seymour Haden. The Print Collector's Club's limited three hundred elected members were the only ones offered an edition of the annual presentation print selected from three alternative plates etched by members of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and such artist included Malcolm Osborne, 1921 "Montaza Bay, Egypt", Gereald Leslie Brockhurst, 1922 "Pepita' Robert Austin, 1924 "Mendicanti", Martin Hardie, 1927 "Cafes at Saint-Malo", Charles William Taylor, 1928 "Before Burford", Ian Strang, 1932 "Sussex Farmyard", Laura Knight, 1935 "Bareback Rider", and Laura Knight again in 1943 "Carting Corn" , Ian Strang again in 1945, "Houses by the Bridge, Harold Thornton, 1949 "Cotswold Country", Orthez",and aggain Malcolm Osborne in 1951 with "The Valley Farm Semur" and so many others important British printmakers and prints.
