Title: Lolita
Artist: Stodart, Edward William (England, 1841 - 1914)
Date: 1892
Medium: Original Stipple Engraving
Publisher: F. Donnell, London
Note: Edward William Stodart 'Edward Stodart': A late nineteenth century English stipple engraver, Edward William Stodart studied printmaking techniques under his father, George J. Stodart. During his career, E. W. Stodart exhibited his fine stipple engravings throughout the British Isles and America. He was commissioned to engrave portraits and figure studies by various London publishers and was a frequent contributing artist to the Art Journal. Edward William Stodart's son, Edward Jackson Stodart (1879-1934), was also a prominent stipple engraver in the early twentieth century.
This particular impression of Edward Stodart's Lolita is a proof before letters. Victorian era publishers often printed a small number of initial impressions before printing the title along the lower margin. These early impressions were often printed upon superior quality paper and hand signed by the engraver. Regular edition impressions, with the printed titles, were most often printed on wove paper and not hand-signed. Obviously, hand-signed, proof impressions are of greater value.
An example of Lolita can be found in the collection of The University of Michigan Museum, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Accession No.: 1931.20
Stipple Engraving: Rather than etching lines, the design is constructed by applying a multitude of dots or flicks. The method was particularly appropriate for building flesh tones. Bartolozzi and other late 18th Century printmakers employed stippling for their decorative works. A laborious process, it was virtually abandoned by most artists in the early 19th Century.
