William Steig - Family Reunion

Family Reunion

"Family Reunion" is one of several large lithographs William Steig created in the 1980's decade. Like all his great art it is dominated by his own unique style and humor. It depicts an odd but rather ordinary group of people coming together for family reunion. This original lithograph is printed upon hand-made, laid paper bearing the 'Arches France' watermark and with full, deckled margins as published in New York in 1982 in a signed edition of fifty impressions. This is a fine, original example of the art created by the American artist, William Steig.

William Steig: A distinguished twentieth century cartoonist and sculptor, William Steig was the dominant cover artist and illustrator for the New Yorker magazine since he contributed his first drawing to the publishers in 1930. Steig first studied art at the City College, New York, (1923-25) and then at the National Academy of Design (1925-29). He was on his way to becoming a 'serious' artist when the Great Depression occurred. William Steig stated,

" It was the big crash, and my father lost all his savings and his work. I had gone to art school. I decided, 'I'll make cartoons.' I sold my first drawings to a magazine called Judge. The first year I earned something like $4,800. and supported my family in quite good style. I took care of my folks until they died." *

During his long career, William Steig tirelessly produced watercolours, drawings, paintings, lithographs and sculptures that both delight and challenge the eye. Such institutions as the Brooklyn Museum, the Rhode Island Museum of Art and Smith College include examples of his art in their permanent collections. The Archives of the New Yorker houses over two hundred of his original drawings. William Steig also wrote and illustrated over thirty children's books as well as a number of books of drawings. In 1970, William Steig was awarded the prestigious Caldecott Medal and in 1975 received the William Allen White Award.
