It is in every regard a most spectacular image. This scene depicts a group of deer by a brook in the forest. At the Brook is a superb, original example of the lithographic landscape art created by the American artist, Russell Sherman.

Artist: Sherman, James Russell (1906, Maxwell, Iowa - 1989, Denver, Colorado)
Date: c. 1940

Note:

James Russell Sherman: A fine twentieth century American Regionalist artist, James Russell Sherman also listed as Russell Sherman was born in Maxwell, Iowa, but spent most of his early years in Sterling, Colorado. R. Sherman studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute and later attended the Arts Student League of New York. During his residence in NYC, Sherman studied under such fine American artists as Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, George Picken, and Harry Steinberg. During his artistic career, Sherman's volume of work included Regionalist art, cubism, abstracts, portraits, still life, social issues, and landscapes of East and West coasts, Plains states, and the Rocky Mountains in the mediums of lithography, illustration, watercolor, and painting. In addition to being an excellent painter, he was also a fine lithographer, watercolor artist, and commercial illustrator. He created book jacket designs and illustrations for books such as, "So You Think It's New", by Wilfred J. Funk with drawings by Russell Sherman, Funk and Wagnails, New York (1937), "Walking on gold" by Phyllis Crawford, illustrated by Russell Sherman, Julian Messner, New York, (1940), "Ghost Town Adventure", by Rutherford Montgomery, Holt, Rinehart & Winston, Inc, with illus. by Russell Sherman, (1942). He also illustrated Greeting cards such as the Seasons Greetings Christmas card entitled, "Central Park NYC" (c. 1940), as well as spot drawings, movie advertisements, lettering and other forms of art. His art was published in fine American journals such as the 'Exquire', 'Fortune', 'Ladies Home Journal', 'The New Yorker', 'Sports Afield', and various other trade journals. James Russell Sherman was awarded a grant for a mural (in tempera on gesso), entitled "Industries around Loveland" for the downtown Valentine Station post office in Loveland, Colorado after winning the competition held by the U.S. Treasury department in 1938.

Russell Sherman served as a military artist in the 42nd Infantry Division, (Rainbow division), Camp Gruber, Oklahoma (1843-1845). The Gruber Guidon from Camp Gruber, (newspaper), Oklahoma, September 15, 1944, page 1 notes that Pvt Russell Sherman of the 242d infantry was busy painting murals of little animals (bunnies, squirrels, giraffes, a bear, an owl and what not) for the GI's children and also notes he was painting a 30 x 16 foot mural for the Social Hall in Service Club No. 2. The newspaper mentions that Sherman had done many fine lithographs of scenes in western towns and the Colorado ranch where he grew up. Two months later, another article in the Gruber Guidon newspaper, December 15, 1944, page 3, notes the dedication ceremony of the finished mural painted by Pvt Russell Sherman of the 232d inf. would be loaned to Service club No. 2, as long as the club will be in existence. Major General Harry J. Collins, commanding officer of Rainbow division, would do the honors of presenting Sherman's mural. Representatives of the Philbrook Art Center in Tulsa attended the ceremony. The Mural, done in oils on canvas depicts the Oklahoma Indian in modern warfare. (note: one news article notes Sherman was in the 242d Inf , another notes the 232rd. inf, and a third source notes the 42nd infantry division).
Around 1952, Sherman created a series of paintings to bring attention to the social issues related to highway accidents caused by drunk driving and speeding. Sherman was a pioneer in this field as his campaign took place decades before even MADD was formed. Backed by the State Highway departments and automobile insurance companies, these paintings were exhibited in Colorado, New York, and other states.
In 1957, James Russell Sherman moved to Denver Colorado, to pursue another lifelong passion, ice skating. He worked as the manager and instructor of an ice skating rink in downtown Denver. "The Billboard, the Amusement Industry's Newsweekly", december 16, 1957, page 66 includes an article noting the opening of the new Denver Ice Rink, part of the Zeckendorf Plaza Hotel to be managed by Russell Sherman. Russell Sherman later continued to teach drawing and painting in Denver. Throughout his career, Sherman traveled across the United States many times. He spent his summers in Colorado and winters in New York. Later, He spent long stretches in Santa Barbara, California, where his favorite subjects included the Santa Barbara missions, seascapes and local architecture.
The Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Arts, Denver Colorado, includes an oil painting (portrait of a woman, 1969) by James Russell Sherman in its permanent collection. The Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, Ohio, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC also include works by Sherman. The Denver Public Library includes twenty two James Sherman Russell paintings in their Western Art Collection, entitled, "Santa Barbara", undated, "Fools Souvenir", one of his many paintings inspired by a car accident, 1956, "Pueblo, Colorado", 1949, "Denver Colorado" undated, "Silverton, Colorado", 1951, "Green bridge, Denver" 1951, a portrait of an old woman, a still life, and other fine landscape and architectural paintings. A Retrospective of the Art of James Russell Sherman will be held by the Denver Public Library. For further information please view their site.
Russell Sherman's art has been exhibited at the Weyne Art Gallery and the 8th Street Gallery, NYC, (1938), New York World's Fair, (1939), the Art Institute of Chicago, (1939-1940 & 1945). His original lithograph entitled, "Dancer" is listed in the exhibition catalogue of the seventh international exhibition, Lithogrraphy and Wood Engraving, at the Art Institute of Chicago, from November 10, 1939 to January 15, 1940. Other exhibitions include the Denver Art Museum, (1940 - 1942), The Lincoln Art Center (1943 and 1945), the Library of Congress, (1943 - 1945 - 1946), Philbrook Art Center, (1945), and numerous other institutions.
A number of Russell Sherman's lithographs were commissioned by the Associated American Artists of New York. Since its founding (in the mid 1930's), the A.A.A. was responsible for the publication of many important etchings and lithographs by such major American artists as Reginald Marsh, Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. Both by its printing techniques and by the quality of paper (a sturdy white, wove), Sherman's At the Brook is most probably an Associated American Artists commissioned lithograph.
