Note: Luigi Rossini: The last great etcher of Roman antiquities, Luigi Rossini graduated as both an artist and an architect from the Academy of Bologna. Coming to Rome in 1813, Luigi Rossini's first 'Vedute' were published the following year. Like his great predecessor, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Luigi Rossini most often etched his large and impressive views in series form. Some of Luigi Rossini's most famous series include, 'Le Antichita dei controni di Roma', 'I Sette Colli di Roma antica e moderna', 'Gli Archi Trionfali Onorari e Funebri degli Antichi Romani' and 'Le Antichita di Pompei'.
  Etched in 1822, Veduta dell' Avanzo dell' Anfiteatro Castrense originates from 'Le antichita romane: ossia raccolta delle piu interessanti vedute di Roma antica'. Luigi Rossini began this magnificent series of Roman antiquities in 1819 and the final completed version of one hundred and one large plates was published in Rome in 1823. This original etching is indicative of his fine work from this set.

Condition: Printed on early 19th century thick wove paper and with thread margins beyond the plate-mark on all sides. Signed and dated by Rossini in the plate along the lower margin. Containing slight creasing and spotting in the upper margin as well as a small repaired tear along the centre left margin, else a strongly printed, early impression and in good condition throughout. This original etching represents a prime example of the architectural art of Luigi Rossini.
