Louis Prang - Lammergeyer Birds of Prey

Lammergeyer (Birds of Prey)

Louis Prang's original chromolithograph, "Lammergeyer (Birds of Prey)" also known as the (Lammergeier or the Bearded Vulture), is printed on nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published in New York by Selmar Hess in 1898. It hails from a natural history set entitled, "Animate Creation" containing original color lithographs created under the supervision of the German / American lithographic artist, Louis Prang, such as this original example entitled, "Lammergeyer (Birds of Prey)". All the birds of prey, called scientifically 'Raptatores', or 'Accipitres' are known by their compressed and hooked beaks, the powerful talons, and the twelve or fourteen quill-feathers of the tail. A few important features that distinguish Vultures is the shape of their beak, nearly straight at the top, and suddenly curving at the tip. Also the head and upper part of the neck is nearly featherless in the majority of this species. Vultures generally feed on dead carrion, making them a great benefit to the countries they inhabit.

"Lammergeyer (Birds of Prey)" is a fine original example of the bird art of Louis Prang, one of America's foremost color printer of the nineteenth century.

Title: Lammergeyer (Birds of Prey)
Artist: Prang, Louis (Breslau, 1823 - Los Angeles, 1909)
Date: 1898
Medium: Original Chromolithograph
Publisher: Selmar Hess, New York
Note: Louis Prang: Born in Germany, Louis Prang sailed for the United States in 1850. During his initial years in his adopted country he worked for a short period for both Gleason's Pictorial and for lithographic printers in Philadelphia. In 1856 Louis Prang went into lithographic partnership with Julius Mayer, in Boston. By 1864 he set up his own business which then grew to eventually dominate the important field of color lithography in America. Prang & Company created all kinds of color lithographs (chromolithographs), from large landscapes and advertising posters, to botanical, ornamental, architectural and natural history plates, as well as numerous greeting and Christmas cards. No matter what the subject, the distinguishing element of a Prang 'chromo' was that it was usually superior to similar subjects published by the competition. From his long standing Boston establishment, Prang regularly designed and printed the most technically accomplished chromolithographs in the history of the medium. His original color prints demanded as much as thirty-five separate printings in order to achieve the subtleties of tone and color that Prang demanded. No one, either before or after him, matched Prang's consummate skills.
During the 1890's, when Art Nouveau trends altered taste and design, Prang again emerged as America's foremost lithographic printer, lending his expertise to many famous posters. Once author states, "In years to come, Louis Prang was to tower over his competitors. He linked his name for all time to come with the word chromolithography, and gradually established himself as the country's leading promoter and purveyor of chromos." *

Lammergeyer (Birds of Prey): All the birds of prey, called scientifically 'Raptatores', or 'Accipitres' are known by their compressed and hooked beaks, the powerful talons, and the twelve or fourteen quill-feathers of the tail. Louis Prang's chromolithograph depicts birds of prey, the Lammergeyer or ('Lammergeier' - Bearded Vulture). Vultures are distinguished by the shape of their beak, nearly straight at the top, and suddenly curving at the tip. The middle toe is larger than the others, and the outer toes are connected to them at their base by a small membrane. The head and upper part of the neck is nearly featherless in the majority of this species. Their eyes are un-shaded by the feathery ridge, which overhangs these organs in the eagles. Vultures generally feed on dead carrion, making them a great benefit to the countries they inhabit. When pressed for food, they will attack flocks, herds, rats, mice, small birds or insects.

The 'Lammergeyer' or 'Bearded Vulture': This bird's name derives from the long and stiff bristle-like hairs found around the nostrils and beneath the bill The 'cere', a soft naked skin which is placed on the base of the beak, is not very large, and the upper mandible is rather higher in front of the cere. It is gray-brown, dashed with white along the center of each feather. The under surface of the body and neck are nearly white, tinged with a wash of reddish-brown, which varies with the individual bird. The younger birds are much darker in hue. The feet are smaller than most birds of pray, making it difficult to seize or retain their prey. The 'Lammergeyer' is not a bird of chase like the eagle or falcon. It obtains its food by striking goats and other animals over the precipices near which they are standing. Like all vultures, the 'Lammergeyer' is also an invaluable scavenger.

Source: This original Prang chromolithograph entitled, "Lammergeyer" hails from a natural history set entitled, Animate Creation. All the color lithographs dealing with natural history subjects -- including eleven portrayals of birds -- were created under his supervision. As with all Prang's work, the color printing is both accurate and superbly rendered.
