Note: Sir William Nicholson: One of the most influential British artists of the early twentieth century, Sir William Nicholson studied under Herkomer, at Bushey, and in Paris. Nicholson first gained recognition in 1894 when he collaborated with his brother-in-law, the artist James Pryde, on a series of lithographic posters. The collaborating artists became known as the "Beggarstaff Brothers", and it was here that the characteristic masses of colour and the bold outlines that would become the trademark of Nicholson were first seen.
William Nicholson's fame reached its height with his series of woodcuts and lithographs made for the publisher, William Heinemann. These include the series, An Alphabet (1896), An Almanac of Twelve Sports (1898), London Types (1899), and Twelve Portraits (1900). Twelve Portraits, generally credited as being Nicholson's greatest set, included depictions of Queen Victoria, Sarah Bernhardt, Whistler, Kipling and Mark Twain. The portrait of Sir Henry Hawkins belongs to this famous set. The prints comprising the Twelve Portraits are masterpieces of subtle satire. Sir Henry Hawkins (1817-1907) was the 1st Baron of Brampton. He is here portrayed in his prominent position as a red robed judge.
William Nicholson created his last original prints in 1901, but by that time he had created a major revival of the woodcut and lithograph in modern English art. His later career was devoted almost entirely to portrait painting and he was knighted in 1936.
