Suzanne Mess

Suzanne Mess - Marguerite Gignac as Giulietta

Marguerite Gignac as Giulietta

Suzanne Mess' original watercolour and gouache portraying Marguerite Gignac as Giulietta is a primary example of the artist's skills. Suzanne Mess is now recognized as one of North America's leading costume designers of stage and screen and, in particular, opera. Although this original drawing bears no date, it was probably created in 1958. During that year the Canadian Opera Company launched a production of Jacques Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffmann" (Les Contes d'Hoffmann), with Marguerite Gignac in the lead roles of Giulietta, Olympia and Antonia. In 1970 Suzanne Mess designed the costumes for another production of "Tales of Hoffmann", this time for New York's Metropolitan Opera and with Beverly Sills in the role of Giulietta.
