Jean Baptiste Mauzaisse

Jean Baptiste Mauzaisse - Napoleon Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon (Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte)

Jean Baptiste Mauzaisse: An original lithograph by the French painter and printmaker, Jean Baptiste Mauzaisse, Napoleon dates from 1828. As Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) had died at St. Helena only seven years before, this lithographic portrait was created quite early in the French wave of veneration for the life and career of the former Emperor.

J. B. Mauzaisse based this original lithograph upon his own painting of Napoleon Bonaparte which was then in the collection of the Duke of Orleans.

Napoleon is printed upon fine chine colle and mounted onto a large sheet of wove paper as published for Galerie du Palais Royal between 1825 & 1829. It is signed in the stone by Jean Baptiste Mauzaisse to the lower left. J. B. Mauzaisse's portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte represents both a strong example of his work and a major contribution to early Napoleonic art.
