Philip Little

Philip Little - The Meadow

The Meadow

Philip Little's original drypoint engraving, "The Meadow" is printed upon laid, hand-made paper with the "Head & Co." watermark and with full, deckled margins. It is signed and dated in the plate to the lower left and is also signed in pencil under the plate, "Philip Little, 1928". The artist has titled the engraving on the extreme lower left margin, "The Meadow", in pencil. Altogether, this engraving is a fine, original example of the landscape art created by the American artist, Philip Little.

Title: The Meadow
Artist: Little, Philip (Swampscott, Massachusetts, 1857 - Salem, 1942)
Date: 1927
Medium: Original Drypoint Engraving
Note: Philip Little: An accomplished American painter and etcher, Philip Little studied at the Boston Museum School. His first one man exhibition of art was held at the Rowlands Gallery, Boston, in 1907. During this time period Little shared a studio with Frank Benson and the two artists often created their etchings and paintings together. Little was also appointed the Curator of Art for the Essex Institute, Salem.
Philip Little was a full member of the Guild of Boston Artists, the Portland Art Association, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, the National Arts Club and the American Federation of Arts. His paintings and prints received awards from the Art Institute of Chicago (1912) and the Pan Pacific Exposition, San Francisco (1915). Today, Little's engravings and etchings are included in the following collections; the Library of Congress, Washington, DC, the New York Public Library and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
For many years Philip Little created his landscape etchings and paintings from his summer residence in MacMahan Island, Maine. In all probability, The Meadow depicts a scene near this location. As well, Little did not number The Meadow to a specific edition size. As it is a drypoint engraving, however, it is likely that fewer than twenty impressions were struck from the plate. This particular drypoint exhibits a rich, velvety burr throughout and is thus a very early impression.
Size: 11 3/4 X 9 3/4 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed upon laid, hand-made paper with the "Head & Co." watermark and with full, deckled margins. Containing tape staining to the upper corner (verso) and slight evidence of mat burn about 1/2" an inch from the plate-mark on all sides. Else a superbly rich impression with full burr and in very good condition throughout. Also the artist has titled the engraving on the extreme lower left margin, "The Meadow", in pencil. Altogether, The Meadow represents a superb, original example of the engraved art of Philip Little.
