Jacob Burckhardt

Albert Kruger's portrait of Jacob Burckhardt is an original woodcut printed upon hand-made laid paper with the'van Gelder Zonen' watermark and with large, full margins as published by "Pan" in 1898. It is signed in the block with Kruger's 'AK' monogramme and bearing the publisher's title along the lower left margin. It is a fine example of the portrait art by the German artist, Albert Kruger. Jacob Burckhardt was a famous Swiss historian and arts scholar, founder of 'Kulturgeschichte'.

Note: Albert Kruger: A German etcher, wood engraver and woodcut artist, Albert Kruger lived and worked in Berlin. His graphic art was exhibited extensively in Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France. Albert Kruger's woodcuts received a medal at the Munich Exposition, 1892, and a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle, Paris, 1900.
  During his career Albert Kruger became best known for his wood engraved portraits of fellow artists, writers and composers. This original woodcut of Jacob Burckhardt was commissioned by the German publisher, Pan, as a memorial portrait.
  Jacob Burckhardt (Basel, 1818-1897) was a famous Swiss historian and arts scholar. The founder of 'Kulturgeschichte' (cultural history), some of his major books include, The Age of Constantine the Great (1853) and The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy (1860). Jacob Burckhardt was the first historian to examine an era's political, social, moral, philosophical, religious and artistic elements as an integrated whole.
  Pan: During the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century leading art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest prints from this vital era were commissioned and published by The Studio, in London, Pan, in Germany, The Print Connoisseur, in America and Vervielfaltigende Kunst, in Vienna.
  Pan was the first German journal to commission independent works of original graphic art. During its five year history (1895 - 1900) it published a valuable number of etchings, lithographs and woodcuts by leading German printmakers.

Condition: Printed upon hand-made laid paper with the'van Gelder Zonen' watermark and with large, full margins as published by Pan in 1898. Containing very faint foxing in the outer margins, else a fine, full colour impression and in good condition throughout. Signed in the block with Kruger's 'AK' monogramme and bearing the publisher's title along the lower left margin. Jacob Burckhardt represents a prime, original example of the portrait art of Albert Kruger.
