William Harvey: Harvey's Dentatus has been
described as 'probably the largest, certainly the most labored, block
that had then been cut in England. It marked the crowning achievement
of Harvey's career. |

One of England's greatest early wood engravers and designers
for wood engraving, William Harvey was apprenticed at age fourteen to
none other than Thomas Bewick, the father of English wood engraving. Harvey
quickly gained a privileged place among Bewick's pupils and worked extensively
with his master on the engravings for his famous Aesop's Fables. Harvey
left Bewick in 1817 to study under B. R. Haydon, but retained close contact
with his former master until his death in 1828. |

Assasination of L. S. Dentatus however, marked the crowning achievement
of William Harvey's career. It should be recalled that the early years of wood
engraving featured prints of very small size, most often used as vignettes
or small illustrations. Working upon the end grain of boxwood, engravers
could achieve very delicate and subtle effects, but the labour involved
for even small compositions was immense. Then, in 1821, William Harvey's
Assassination of L. S. Dentatus was published, which in both its
size and complexity rivaled the best large copperplate engravings of the
day. |
