John McLure Hamilton's original lithograph, "Portrait of the Right Honourable William Ewart Gladstone" is printed upon pale green wove paper and with large, full margins as published in 1898 by T. It is signed in the stone by the artist to the lower right. This original color lithograph is a fine example of the portrait art created by the British artist, John McLure Hamilton. Beginning in 1868, the Right Honourable William Ewart Gladstone was England's Prime Minister on four separate occasions. He is considered England's most important nineteenth century statesman.

Note: John McLure Hamilton: A leading turn of the century portrait painter and illustrator, J. McLure Hamilton first studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, under Thomas Eakins, and then at the Royal Academy, Antwerp, and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Although he maintained a permanent Philadelphia address he lived and worked in England for a period of fifty-eight years.
  John McLure Hamilton was a full member of the Philadelphia Water Color Club, the American Federation of Arts, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Pastel Society and the Senefelder Club, London. Today his portraits are included in the following collections; the National Portrait Gallery, London, Luxembourg Museum, Paris and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
  During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries John McLure Hamilton painted the portraits of many contemporary English dignitaries. These included Cardinal Manning, George Meredith, Richard Vaux and Prime Minister Gladstone. He was also the author of Men I have Painted and the official painter to Prime Minister Gladstone.
  Portrait of the Right Honourable W. E. Gladstone was one of several original lithographs created for a portfolio published in 1898 by T. Fisher Unwin entitled, Lithography & Lithographers:Some chapters in the history of the art, by Elizabeth Robins Pennell; together with desriptions and technical explanations of modern artistic methods by Joseph Pennel. In this work Pennell examined the artistic advancements of lithography, with particular emphasis on his contemporaries. With this in mind he commissioned original lithographs from seven artists, including John McLure Hamilton, James McNeil Whistler, Alphonse Legros, William Strang, C. H. Shannon and Alexandre Lunois. Most of the lithographs (including this original example) were printed by London's master lithographic printer, Thomas Way.
  William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) is arguably England's most important nineteenth century statesman. Beginning in 1868, Gladstone was England's Prime Minister on four separate occasions. Under his leadership such important Acts as the English Education Act, the Irish Land Act, and the Irish Home Rule Bill were introduced. A Liberal, William Ewart Gladstone's primary political opponents were Benjamin Disraeli and Lord Salisbury. W. E. Gladstone was also a classical scholar and wrote such books as Studies on Homer and the Homeric Age, Juvenius Mundi and Landmarks of Homeric Study.
