Ginko - Akichi Mitsuhide Attacks Oda Nobunaga At Honnoji Temple Great Japanese History Illustrated

Akichi Mitsuhide Attacks Oda Nobunaga at Honnoji Temple (Great Japanese History Illustrated)

Ginko's original woodcut, "Akichi Mitsuhide Attacks Oda Nobunaga at Honnoji Temple" was created by the Japanese woodcut artist in 1898. This impression is printed upon hand-made, nineteenth century Japanese mulberry paper as published by Matsuki Heikichi for the "Great Japanese History Illustrated". This series depicted the great events of Japanese history and folklore. Oda Nobunaga was a powerful daimyo of Japan, head of the Oda clan (descendants of the Taira clan), and one of the most formidable warlords of the Sengoku period (a period of social upheaval, disputes, and military conflict in Japanese history marked by many as the 'Age of Civil War')

Note: A noted innovator, Ginko filled a dual role during the Sino-Japanese War as both illustrator and war correspondent. Stylistically, he bears similarities to Yoshitoshi, and probably Ginko studied under this master. Ginko's masterpiece is the series of one hundred woodcuts, which comprise, "Great Japanese History Illustrated", of which this original woodcut entitled, "Akichi Mitsuhide Attacks Oda Nobunaga at Honnoji Temple" is a fine example. This series depicted the great events of Japanese history and folklore and was published in ten folding portfolios during 1897 and 1898. These woodcuts achieved great critical recognition and even received an official award from the Japanese government. Displaying a complex range of colours and designs, these works stand as one of the highpoints of Meiji era art.
As little as forty years ago, the trend with Japanese art collectors was to reject the woodcuts of the Meiji era (1868 - 1912) as being garish and unrefined. The introduction of Western pigments and styles (c. 1865.) created a dynamic revolution in Japanese art. Bold new colour patterns and equally bold design concepts began to dominate the woodcut. Far from ruining traditional art forms, Meiji artists injected a vital life into the woodcut by amalgamating Japanese and Western forms. The great masters of this era -- Yoshitoshi, Ginko, Chikanobu and others -- thus created a number of strikingly original images and contemporary scholarship now favourably compares their works with the art of earlier nineteenth century artists.
The Japanese samurai warrior, Oda Nobunaga was a powerful daimyo of Japan, head of the Oda clan (descendants of the Taira clan), and one of the most formidable warlords of the Sengoku period (a period of social upheaval, disputes, and military conflict in Japanese history marked by many as the 'Age of Civil War'). It has been noted that on of Oda Nobunaga's major goals was national unification as Japan was then ruled by hundreds of autonomous domains (hereditary land holdings), that were under the control of daimyo (powerful feudal lords who ruled Japan). The Oda clan crest (mon), known as the (Oda moukkou) was distinctive for its five petals around the edge, and is believed to represent the flowering Japanese quince.
