Hector Gavin's original engraving, Isobel Walker, --- Aged 112 Years is based upon a design created by the Scottish painter, James Wales. It is printed on thick, laid, eighteenth century paper as published around 1775. This portrait is surely one of Hector Gavin's most remarkable works of engraved art. Parish records seem to indicate that Isobel Walker was born in 1664 which would indicate that she died at the age of 110. Whatever the case such longevity was extremely rare in the eighteenth century and her age gave her celebrity status throughout the British Isles.

Note: Hector Gavin: An eighteenth century Edinburgh engraver, Hector Gavin's first works appeared around 1760. For the following four decades he was constantly commissioned by that city's publishers for both individual plates, such as this example, and works for illustrated books. Hector Gavin was best known for his engraved maps as well as portraits and ex-libris designs.
  James Wales: A Scottish painter, James Wales received his education at the Marischal College of Aberdeen. He began exhibiting portraits at the Royal Academy in 1778. In 1791 Wales moved to India and created many fine paintings of both portraits and views of that country.
  Isobel Walker: Parish records seem to indicate that Isobel Walker was born in 1664 which would indicate that she died at the age of 110. Whatever the case such longevity was extremely rare in the eighteenth century and her age gave her celebrity status throughout the British Isles. Isobel Walker, --- Aged 112 Years is surely a fine, original example of the art created by the Scottish artists, Hector Gavin and James Wales.

  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed on thick, laid, eighteenth century paper and cropped to the plate-mark on all sides. Containing faint foxing as well as one pin prick hole within the image, else a strongly printed impression and in good condition throughout. "Isobel Walker, - Who Lived in the Parrish of Daviot, Aberdeen Shire, and Died the 2nd of November, 1774, Aged 112 Years" is both a fine work of engraved art and a historically important document.
