La Sulamite

Othon Friesz's original lithograph, "La Sulamite" is printed upon wove paper and with full, wide margins as published by the 'Galerie des Peintres-Graveurs' in Paris in 1928 in the limited edition of twenty-five impressions. This original impression is signed by Othon Friesz in pencil and numbered, '15/25' along the lower margin. "La Sulamite" represents both a scarce and important example of the graphic art created by the French artist, Achille Emile Othon Friesz, one of France's greatest masters of the twentieth century.

Title: La Sulamite
Artist: Friesz, Achille Emile Othon 'Othon Friesz' (Le Havre, 1879 - Paris, 1949)
Date: 1928
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: Galerie des Peintres-Graveurs, Paris
Edition: Limited edition of twenty-five impressions, numbered 15/25
Note: Achille Emile Othon Friesz 'Othon Friesz': One of the twentieth century's most important French artists, Othon Friesz first studied art under Lhullier in his native Le Havre. His fellow students there were Dufy and Braque. The three artists became lifelong friends and clearly influenced one another's work throughout their careers. In 1898, Friesz moved to Paris and shortly thereafter studied in the studio of Bonnat. Othon Friesz's early art from this period shows an inclination towards impressionism. In the first years of the new century, however, he sought to break away from impressionist forms and he became associated with Henri Matisse. Together the two artists formed the vanguard of the Fauvist movement which was soon embraced by others such as Braque, Derain, Dufy, Manguin, Marquet, Van Dongen and De Vlaminck. The importance of Fauvism cannot be understated. With its bold display of colour and form it was the first truly revolutionary movement within modern art.
By 1907, Othon Friesz had established a strong reputation for his paintings throughout France, England and America. His first works of original graphic art appeared in 1910. Most of his initial prints were either woodcuts or wood engravings, but from 1920 on, Othon Friesz created mainly lithographs. These were published either as individual works of art or as illustrations for 'livres d'artiste', such as Rouen, by Andre Maurois (1929) or Petronius's, Satyricon (1949). The majority of Othon Friesz's original lithographs depict either nudes or landscapes.
La Sulamite dates from 1928. It is both one of the artist's most famous and scarce lithographs. The Paris publisher, Galerie des Peintres-Graveurs, commissioned Othon Friesz to contribute a suite of seven large lithographs. For an unknown reason, La Sulamite and the six others were never offered to the public and were printed in a sole and small edition of twenty-five signed impressions. Each bears the blindstamp of the publisher along the edge of the lower margin.
Scholars often draw strong parallels between Othon Friesz's lithographs and Matisse's etchings and lithographs. Clearly a work of art such as La Sulamite is comparable to Matisse, particularly his Odalisques. The lifelong friendship of these two great masters and the fact that they often worked together led to a natural sharing of artistic ideas. However, I also see elements of the two other great icons of Friesz's artistic language, Cezanne and Delacroix. In La Sulamite, the delineation of the figures and faces is reminiscent of Cezanne's cubist concerns, while the wonderful sensuality of the composition evokes the spirit of Delacroix. In the end, only a true giant of modern art such as Othon Friesz could produce so many potent elements within one image. La Sulamite is a masterpiece of modern art.
