Sheldon Fink

Sheldon Fink - The 300 Year Old Pine

The 300 Year Old Pine

Sheldon Fink's original etching, The 300 Year Old Pine, dates from 1964. It is a complex example of intaglio printmaking, combining both soft and hard grounds to create strong textures and contrasts of light and shade. Shelly Fink has signed and dated this compelling etching within the plate and pencil signed, numbered and titled the work along the lower margin. The 300 Year Old Pine is a fine, original example of the landscape art created by the American artist, Sheldon Fink.

Note: Sheldon Fink (Shelly Fink): A twentieth century American painter, etcher and lithographer, Sheldon (Shelly) Fink first exhibited his art in New York in the early 1950's. Shunning contemporary abstract trends, he formed friendships with that city's other representational artists, such as Jack Levine and Herbert Steinberg. During the 1960's some of Sheldon Fink's original etchings and lithographs were commissioned by the major New York publisher, the Associated American Artists. At this time he was also active as an illustrator, contributing designs to Time, Life, and Sports Illustrated. Books illustrated by Shelly Fink include Jack Zanger's, The Long Reach (1962).
In the latter part of his career Sheldon Fink lived, worked and taught art techniques in the Berkshires region of Massachusetts. One-man exhibitions of Shelly Fink's art were held at the Albany Art Institute, the Berkshire Art Museum and at the Lenox Library. He was awarded Tiffany Foundation Grants for painting (1957) and etching (1963). Today the art of Sheldon Fink is included in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
