John Faber, The Elder

John Faber The Elder - Theodorus Beza Veselius

Theodorus Beza Veselius

John Faber, The Elder's portrait of "Theodorus Beza Veselius" is an original eighteenth century English mezzotint. This impression is printed upon early 18th century laid paper as published by John Faber, The Elder in 1714.

Next to Calvin, Theodorus Beza ranks as the most distinguished man in the early reformed Church of Geneva. Perhaps the most influential of Beza's writings is his Latin translation of the New Testament.

Title: Theodorus Beza Veselius
Artist: Faber, John, The Elder (The Hague, c. 1660 - Bristol, 1721)
Date: 1714
Medium: Original Mezzotint
Publisher: John Faber, The Elder
Note: John Faber: Born in Holland, John Faber holds an important position in the history of the early English mezzotint. It is believed he came to London in 1687 and began engraving portraits shortly thereafter. Around 1707, John Faber established a shop near the Savoy in the Strand and began printing and publishing his own work. Among his more famous mezzotints are the portraits of the founders of both Oxford and Cambridge, a set of the heads of the twelve Caesars and twenty-one portraits of the Reformers. Theodorus Beza Veselius no doubt originates from the last named series.
Cryil Davenport, in Mezzotints, writes that all of John Faber the Elder's "prints are scarce." * He also mentions that Faber's work is noteworthy in that he was one of the few mezzotint engravers who often both designed and engraved his plates. Most mezzotint engravings, both from these early times and afterwards, are based upon the paintings of other artists. As well, John Faber was the father and teacher of John Faber the Younger (1695-1756), who became the most famous English mezzotint artist of the following generation.
Theodore Beza Veselius: Next to Calvin, Theodore Beza ranks as the most distinguished man in the early reformed Church of Geneva. Born in Burgundy in 1519 he studied under Melchior Volmar, in Orleans. After residing in Paris for a number of years he moved to Geneva in 1548 and was converted to Protestantism. Soon afterwards he became of professor of theology and the most active assistant of Calvin. After Calvin's death in 1564, Theodore Beza Veselius took command of the administration of the Genevese Church. Among his many writings are Theological Treatises and Histoire ecclesiastique des Eglises reformees. Perhaps the most influential of Theodore Beza Veselius's writings is his Latin translation of the New Testament.
