Henry Elton - Burmese Boy Tonghoo Province

Burmese Boy: Tonghoo Province

Henry Elton's "Burmese Boy: Tonghoo Province" is an original watercolor created by the British artist in 1867. This portrait is painted upon fine, nineteenth century watercolour paper, initialed and dated '67' within the lower image. As well, Henry Strachan Elton has written these words on the verso of the paper, "H. Elton, Tonghoo, October 1867." "Burmese Boy: Tonghoo Province".

Title: Burmese Boy: Tonghoo Province
Artist: Major-General Henry Strachan Elton 'Henry Elton' (England, 1841 - 1934)
Date: 1867
Medium: Original Watercolor
Note: Some of the most valuable artistic records of England's 18th and 19th century colonies were provided by military artists. In Canada, Australia, the Caribbean, India, Burma and elsewhere, military officers drew and painted the land, the animals and their peoples. Such paintings, watercolours and drawings (many created by gifted hands) left a treasured legacy for science and cultural research.
One such military artist was Major-General Henry Strachan. Henry Elton was born in England and received his military training there. As early as 1866 he had seen service in both Burma and India. Records indicate that he was stationed in these countries until after 1883 when he returned to England. Henry Strachan retired as a Major-General and during the early 20th century he exhibited a number of his watercolours at the Army Officer's Art Society, London. Major-General Elton lived in London and later moved to Sidmouth, Devon.
During his career Henry Elton drew and painted landscapes, architectural views, figure studies and birds. His watercolours of Burma, in particular, are of great interest as many depict in detail the people and animals of this country during the mid nineteenth century. This original watercolour initially was found in a portfolio of drawings and watercolours by Elton. On one he had written, "Views, Habits and Customs of the Native People in Burma", indicating, perhaps, that they were executed for a book. In any case this beautiful representation of a Burmese boy in his native dress gives us a vivid picture of a now long vanished time and culture.
