Epinglier, Plate II (Pin Making)

Defehrt's original engraving, Epinglier, Plate II (Pin Making) is based upon a design created by Goussier for Diderot's Encyclopedie. This impression is printed upon 18th century laid paper and with full margins as published in the first edition of the French Encyclopedie in 1762. Epinglier, Plate II (Pin Making) is a fine, original example of the famous art from Diderot's Encyclopedie.

Note: Defehrt: An engraver of plates for maps and technical publications Defehrt illustrated influential volumes such as Buffon's, Histoire Naturelle. Defehrt was one of the engravers commissioned for the many illustrative plates comprising Diderot's Encyclopedie. Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was a liberal philosopher and social critic. His writings such as, Pensees Philosophiques and Lettre sur les Aveugles, drew the wrath of both church and state. He was in fact imprisoned for a period of one year in 1749.
  The Encyclopedie was published in fourteen large volumes between 1751 and 1765. Containing many articles with large, illustrative engravings, it was the first work to systematically describe and depict the many processes and accomplishments of late eighteenth century life. This original engraving entitled, Epinglier, Plate II (Pin Making) hails from this most important publication. Below is a detail of the upper portion of Defehrt's original engraving.

Condition: Printed upon 18th century laid paper and with full margins as published in the first edition of the Encyclopedie in 1762. Containing the vertical centerfold which is found on all double sized plates. Bearing all the fine lines and tones of a very early impression and in excellent condition throughout. Epinglier, Plate II (Pin Making) represents a prime, original example of the famous art from Diderot's Encyclopedie.
