Pieter de Jode 'The Younger'

Pieter de Jode The Younger - Franciscus de Andrada Leitao

Franciscus de Andrada Leitao (Francisco de Andrada Leitao)

Pieter de Jode’s original engraving, "Franciscus de Andrada Leitao", was published in Antwerp in 1648. A major 17th century Flemish portrait engraver, Pieter de Jode 'The Younger' was regularly commissioned to engrave designs by such contemporaries as Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony Van Dyck and Anselm van Hulle. This original engraving is printed upon fine 17th century, hand-made, laid paper. It is a strongly printed, very early impression before the names of the publisher and engraver were added along the lower margin. The Biblioteca Nacional, Portugal, includes an impression of "Franciscus de Andrada Leitao" in its permanent collection.

Francisco de Andrada Leitao was a Portuguese statesman and diplomat. Under the reign of John IV he served as Ambassador Plenipotentiary to England, and later, Holland. The year this portrait was created (1648) Andrada Leitao was in Munster acting as Portugal’s Ambassador at the peace congress at the close of the Seven Years’ War.

Note: Pieter de Jode 'the Younger': Members of the de Jode family were important contributors to 16th and 17th century Flemish engraving. Pieter de Jode (the Younger) studied engraving techniques under his father, Pieter de Jode (‘the Elder’, 1570-1634). In turn, Pieter the Elder studied engraving first under his father, Gerrit de Jode (1521-1591), and then under Hendrik Goltzius. In 1628 Pieter de Jode (the Younger) was admitted into the Guild of St. Luke, Antwerp. In 1631 and 1632 both he and his father practiced engraving in Paris. When Pieter de Jode returned to Antwerp he worked mostly for Van Dyck and accompanied him on several occasions to live and work in England.
Although Pieter de Jode 'The Younger' engraved some fine religious and mythological scenes his greatest works are his portraits, both after Van Dyck and other contemporaries. In the former category, de Jode worked on a number of plates for Van Dyck’s famous Iconography. His important Van Dyck portraits include King Charles I of England, Thomas Wentworth, Prince Rupert, Jacob Jordaens, Jeanne de Blois and Genevieve d’Urfe, Duchess of Croy.
Anselm van Hulle: Although he was born in Ghent, Anselm van Hulle spent much of his career in Holland. In 1648 he was sent by Prince Henry of Orange to Munster to paint the portraits of the leading dignitaries at the congress at the end of the Seven Years’ War. It was here, of course where Anselm van Hulle created the portrait of Franciscus de Andrada Leitao, which was engraved by Pieter de Jode in Antwerp later in the year.
Anselm van Hulle later served as court painter to Emperor Ferdinand III.
