Title: Les Graveurs Du XIX Siecle par H. Beraldi (Engravers of the 19th Century)
Artist: De Grandmaison, Henri (Etampes, 1834 - Paris, 1901)
Date: 1888
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: Henri Beraldi, Paris
Printer: Lemercier, Paris
Note: Henri de Grandmaison: A full colonel in the French army, Henri de Grandmaison began his artistic career while stationed in North Africa during the 1860's. His initial works were published at this time by Cadart and the 'Societe des Aqua-Fortistes', who were responsible for printing some of the finest French graphic art of the 1860's. Works by Henri de Grandmaison include a set of etched plates created for the portfolio entitled, "The Scots Me-at-Arms and Life-Guards in France, 1418-1830", a suite of lithographs entitled, "Types Algeriens", as well as other artworks.
Around 1870, Henri de Grandmaison turned away from etching rest of his life. Most of the artist's finest works are in the area for military studies. This masterful depiction of an Algerian soldier is indicative of the best of his lithographic work. It hails from volume 7, of Henri Beraldi's set entitled,"Les Graveurs Du XIX Siecle par H. Beraldi" and bears the Text; "Les Graveurs du XIX Siecle. Par H. Beraldi. Conquet Ed.r" in the lower left and the artist's signature to the right of the soldier's foot.
Henri Beraldi and "Les Gravures du XIX Siecle": From 1885 to 1892 the influential French writer, Henri Beraldi issued a twelve volume series of biographical catalogues under the title of "Les Gravures du XIX Siecle". With the emphasis placed upon living French etchers and lithographers, Beraldi requested a number of contemporary masters to contribute original graphic works for the catalogues dedicated to them. The response was an incredible success with such major artists as Felix Buhot, Henri Guerard, Boutet, Henri de Grandmaison, Jules Cheret, Felix Bracquemond and Auguste Lepere contributing brilliant works of a scale and size to fit within the pages of these volumes.
A valuable and scarce reference source, the volumes from these catalogues and particularly the original prints are very difficult to obtain. Henri Beraldi is to be thanked for commissioning these great works, which represent some of the finest graphic art from one of the most exciting eras of the art of France.
