Michael Burghers: With the exception of William Faithorne and David Loggan most of England's early engravers came from other lands. Born in Amsterdam, Michael Burghers spent the early part of his career employed at Utrecht. On Louis XIV's capture of that city, however, Michael Burghers settled in England, residing primarily in Oxford and frequently employed to engrave plates for the University. Beginning in 1676 he engraved views of abbeys, ruins and many other antiquities of the University which are of great interest to the scholars of today.
Michael Burghers was also known as a fine portrait engraver and many portrayals of such dignitaries as James II, Sir Thomas Bodley and Dr. Ratcliff are by his hand. Saint Polycarp was designed and engraved by Michael Burghers as a frontispiece for a volume entitled, "The life of Saint Polycarp, Bishop of Smyna", published around 1685. The volume dealt with the complete life of the Saint, from the writing of his Epistles to his sentence of death by the Romans and his miraculous preservation in the fire. This original engraving is a strong example of Michael Burghers's skills as an artist.
