Title: A Widower
Artist: Buckman, Edwin (London, 1841 -1930)
Date: c. 1890
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Edwin Buckman: A British watercolourist, illustrator and etcher of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Edwin Buckman studied at the Birmingham School of Art and then in Paris and Italy. He began exhibiting his art at the London galleries in 1866 and by 1870 was a regular participant with the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Academy.
Buckman first gained international attention for his illustrative drawings in The Graphic. He was a founding staff artist for this important journal and many of his early contributions depicted the lives of the poor in Victorian London and the events of the Paris Commune. One of his earliest admirers, in fact, was Vincent Van Gogh who collected his illustrations from The Graphic.
Edwin Buckman was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1877. He later served as the drawing master to Queen Alexandra and to the Princess of Wales.
During the 1890's, Edwin Buckman was commissioned by London publishers, particularly English Etchings, for his original etchings and engravings. A Widower, with its strong tonal values and deeply etched lines, is typical of his fine art in this medium.
