Sir Frank Brangwyn

Sir Frank Brangwyn - Pageant of Ludlow Comus

Pageant of Ludlow: Comus

Sir Frank Brangwyn's Pageant of Ludlow: Comus is a fine example of his mature style of the 1930's. In this decade he concentrated less upon architectural themes and more upon figure studies and literary deceptions. In this case, of course, the scene is inspired by John Milton's epic poem, Comus. Frank William Brangwyn emphasizes the wildness of the procession by the delightful tangle of human and beastly bodies and by the bold us of diagonal lines intersecting with the vertical trunks of the forest trees. This etching is surely one of Frank Brangwyn's most remarkable later works of art.

Title: Pageant of Ludlow: Comus
Artist: Brangwyn, Frank William (Bruges, 1867 - London, 1956)
Date: 1934
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Sir Frank Brangwyn: One of the most influential etchers of the early twentieth century, Frank Brangwyn had already established his reputation as a major painter and watercolourist before he attempted his first etching in 1900. He was then quickly drawn more and more to the many possibilities of this artistic medium and by 1926 had completed 331 original etchings. Most of Frank Brangwyn's art concentrated upon figure studies, architectural and marine subjects. He traveled extensively and many of his most famous etchings are of continental views, particularly scenes from Normandy, Belgium and Italy.
Frank Brangwyn's fame rests upon his method of etchings as much as upon his actual deceptions and imagery. As is the case with this original example, his etched lines are often very heavily bitten and a thick film of ink has been left on portions of the plate to create dramatic tonal values. 'Purists' occasionally charge that Brangwyn's etchings are thus too theatrical. Collectors, however, see genius in Brangwyn's methods and examples of his original etchings have thus been avidly sought after for more than eighty years.
Size: 7 3/4 X 9 3/8 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)

Condition: Printed on thick, laid paper and signed in pencil by Frank Brangwyn under the image.
