Note: Klaus Bottger 'Klaus Boettger': A twentieth century master, Klaus Bottger (also spelt 'Klaus Boettger') received his primary artistic education at the Hochschulinstitut in Mainz. Since that time his drawings, paintings, and original prints have been the subject of exhibitions at institutions in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Munich, Berlin, Mannheim, Strasburg, Madrid and elsewhere.
From 1977 to 1991 Klaus Bottger was also active as an artist of the book. He illustrated works by such authors as Ambrose Bierce, Alexandre Dumas, Umberto Eco, Giovanni Boccaccio, Leonard Woolf and Mary Higgins Clark. Today the fine art of Klaus Bottger is included in the following public collections: Neue Sammlungen, Munich, Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Gutenbergmuseum, Mainz, Stadtische Kunsthalle, Mannheim, Kupferstich Kabinett, Berlin, The Albertina, Vienna, Bibliotheques Nationales, Paris, Andersen Museum, Odense, Denmark, and the Denver Art Museum, Colorado.

An original aquatint and etching, "Lola" was commissioned by the American publisher, Ferdinand Roten, in 1974. It stands at the core of Klaus Bottger's highly complex and sometimes disturbing art. Oliver Maitland writes,

"Bottger shares with (Albrecht) Durer a vision of the Fall of Man as both an irresistible human catastrophe and the original confluence of sexuality and mortality. For him, though, Art extends beyond Judaeo-Christian confines, to embrace sex as a defining part of the whole human drama, its sexual consummation is, in itself, a microcosm of the cycle of life and death. Here are echoes of Nietzche’s Birth of Tragedy, in which compulsive Dionysian forces overcome the rational, aesthetically-driven Apollonian condition. At our most exultant, we are also at our closest to complete annihilation." *

Concluding his analysis of Bottger’s art Oliver Maitland states,

"Had he been an artist of, say, still lifes or marine subjects, Klaus Bottger would probably have become a household name in his own lifetime. But, because he was a chronicler of the more physical desires, he has been unjustly neglected. In the realm, Bottger’s art is the most accomplished that I have ever seen." **.
