Note: Giuseppe Bortignoni: An early nineteenth century Italian engraver, Giuseppe Bortignoni was born in Bassano but worked mainly in Rome. There he engraved designs based mostly upon the drawings and paintings of the great masters of the Italian Renaissance. Around 1810 to 1820, however, Giuseppe Bortignoni must have lived and worked in London as three large engravings entitled, Scotch Peasants, Welch Peasants and Irish Peasants all bear his name. At this time it was not uncommon to find Italian engravers working in England. The famous stipple engraver, Francesco Bartolozzi (Florence, Italy, 1727 - Lisbon, Portugal, 1815) moved to London in 1764 and not long after established a large and influential school with many English and Italian followers, which continued into the early decades of the nineteenth century.
It is not known which London publisher commissioned This engraving entitled, Welch Peasants. What is known is that it is one of a set of three dealing with the rustic life of Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Each was engraved by Giuseppe Bortignoni and designed by Richard Westall. The engravings were hand-coloured at the time of publication.
Richard Westall: Some of the finest British engravings from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were designed by Richard Westall. After attending the Royal Academy schools in London (1785), Richard Westall devoted himself to history and landscape subjects. He was an early practitioner of the watercolour medium and many publishers of illustrated books soon sought his designs for publication of illustrated editions of Gray, Moore, Crabbe and other poets of the day.
During the 1790's Richard Westall was commissioned by the famous publisher, John Boydell to work upon both his large engravings for the Shakespeare Gallery and The Poetical Works of John Milton. These now famous works of art established Westall as a major designer of both individual engravings and engravings for illustrated books. Richard Westall was elected an Associate of the prestigious Royal Academy in 1792 and a full Academician in 1794. In the 1820's he was appointed the drawing master to then Princess Victoria.
