Robert Blyth & John Hamilton Mortimer

Robert Blyth and John Hamilton Mortimer - The Gypsies

The Gypsies

Robert Blyth's original etching, The Gypsies is based upon a design created by the British artist, John Hamilton Mortimer. This impression is printed upon 18th century hand-made, laid paper as published in 1780 by Robert Blyth. He has dedicated this etching to Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society. The Gypsies is a fine, original example of the combined talents of John Hamilton Mortimer and Robert Blyth.

Note: John Hamilton Mortimer and Robert Blyth were two immensely gifted artists who died before their time. Despite his short life, John Mortimer received the highest honours, including his appointment as a Royal Academician granted by the King just months before his death. Mortimer's fame as a painter resides in his large, historical compositions. The drawings he designed to be etched, however, are of a completely different nature. These are his famous studies of sea monsters, banditti, gypsies and Shakespearian portrayals --- subjects that explore the fantastic, the mystical and man’s psychological state. John Mortimer’s interest with characterization outside the usual realm of social existence is said to have stemmed from his own youthful experiences. Another strong factor was his admiration for the etchings and paintings of the seventeenth century Italian master, Salvator Rosa. John Mortimer’s etched designs proved inspirational for the work of two other important British artists; Henry Fuseli and William Blake. During the height of late eighteenth century academic and historical art these visionary masters sowed the seeds for the romantic rebellion of the early nineteenth century.
John Hamilton Mortimer etched some of his own designs. Others he designed specifically for his best student, Robert Blyth. Little is known of the life of Robert Blyth other than that he studied under John Hamilton Mortimer and that the majority of his etchings were made after his master’s designs between 1774 and 1782. His style of etching was tremendously free and graceful and was thus perfectly suited to the art of Mortimer. After John Mortimer’s death in 1777, Robert Blyth continued to etch plates after Mortimer’s drawings and even published a small number of them. This is the case with The Gypsies. Robert Blyth has dedicated this etching to Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society, along the lower margin.
