Johannes Avenarius

Johannes Avenarius - Portrait of an Artist

Portrait of an Artist

Johannes Avenarius - "Portrait of an Artist": This original lithograph is printed upon German wove paper and bearing the watermark, 'J. W. Zanders 1919'. It is signed, dated and numbered, by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. "Portrait of an Artist" is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the German Expressionist artist, Johannes Maximilian Avenarius.

Title: Portrait of an Artist (Self Portrait?)
Artist: Avenarius, Johannes Maximilian 'Johannes Avenarius' (Greiffenberg, 1887 - Berlin, 1954)
Date: 1919
Medium: Original Lithograph
Note: Johannes Maximilian Avenarius 'Johannes Avenarius': A German Expressionist painter, etcher, lithographer and illustrator, Johannes Maximilian Avenarius is best known for his portraits of leading figures in the arts and letters. He began to exhibit his art in German cities shortly before the beginning of World War One. Avenarius accepted the post of Professor at the Kunsthochschule fur Textilindustrie, Plauen, in 1930. He moved to Berlin and settled there in 1946.
Johannes Avenarius's art was often associated with that of the famous German playwright and poet, Gerhart Hauptmann (Germany, 1862-1946). He first met Hauptmann in 1907. Avenarius painted at least two portraits of the writer and illustrated his works in various mediums in 1921, 1922 and 1946.
Johannes Avenarius's original lithographs are often compared stylistically to those of Oskar Kokoschka. To be sure, the lithographic portraits created by both artists at this time are charged with psychological intensity. Unfortunately, lithographs by Johannes Avenarius appear infrequently in today's art market. The major reason is that he printed these fine works of art in very small editions. Portrait of an Artist, for example, exists in an edition of only twenty s. Grasping a brush in one hand and a cigar in the other, it is probably a self-portrait of the artist and stands as one of the largest and most compelling portraits created at this time by an Expressionist artist.
Edition: Limited edition of twenty s, numbered 4/20.
Size: 21 1/2 X 17 3/4 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed upon German wove paper and bearing the watermark, 'J. W. Zanders 1919'. Signed, dated and numbered, '4/20', by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. Paper loss has occurred in the upper left corner but this does not intrude into the actual image. Else, a finely printed, strong and in very good condition throughout. Portrait of an Artist represents both a scarce and large original example of the superb lithographic art of Johannes Maximilian Avenarius.
