Irving Amen

Irving Amen - Piazza San Marco 4

Piazza San Marco #4

Irving Amen's "The Piazza San Marco, in Venice", is the subject of at least four of his original prints. The first woodcut, "Piazza San Marco #1", dates from 1954. Piazza San Marco #4 is the largest of Irving Amen's Venice prints and clearly one of his most impressive works of art. Using many separate blocks for each color, it is a masterpiece of form and design. This is signed, titled and numbered, '12/50' by the artist in pencil. It is a fine, original example of the landscape views created by the American artist, Irving Amen.

Throughout his career he traveled extensively, particularly in Europe, Russia and Central America. Besides practicing his art, Irving Amen also taught classes in sculpting and printmaking at such influential schools as the Pratt Institute (1961) and at Notre Dame University (1962). His art has been exhibited with the Society of American Graphic Artists, the Library of Congress and at the National Academy of Design. In 1949 the Smithsonian Institution also launched a one man exhibition of his work. Amen's famous art is now included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Bibliotheque Royale, Brussels, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris.
Irving Amen's original prints are among his most highly regarded works of art and he has shown great talent in the techniques of the woodcut, lithography, serigraphy and etching. In these fields he is a constant and challenging innovator.
Georgetown University, Washington, DC, includes an Artist Proof of Piazza San Marco #4 in its permanent collection. It is interesting to compare their with this published . The lines within the blocks are clearly the same but the colors are distinctly different. Irving Amen must have spent considerable time creatively building and balancing colors to achieve this final, dramatic result. Piazza San Marco #4 is also one of Amen's scarcest prints as it was published in an edition of only fifty s.
