Woodland scene portrays the story of Daphnis and Chloe written by the Greek novelist, Longos, a Bysantine, in the fourth century.

Daphnis and Chloe was created by Gaston Albert Manchon (France, Born, 1855) in 1895. It is based upon a painting by the Spanish artist, Ricardo Lopez Cabrera a native of Seville.  Ricardo Lopez Cabrera received a medal of the third class at the Exposicion Internacional de Bellas Artes at Madrid in 1892.

This striking woodland scene portrays the story written by the Greek novelist, Longos, a Bysantine, in the fourth century.  It is a love story about Daphnis, our hero and our heroine, Chloe.  Both Daphnis and Chloe (unrelated to each other by birth), were exposed at birth, a common practice at the time. They were found and adopted by a goatherd named Lamon and a Shepherd called Dryas. The children grew up together and eventually fell in love. The story recounts many trials and tribulations, but in the end the story has a happy ending for the lovers.  Here, Ricardo Lopez Cabrera depicts a pastoral scene in the woods with the shepherd boy, Daphnis, the young girl, Chloe and an old shepherd surrounded by sheep and goats.
