Music & Dance Portrayed in Art Index: This page contains a listing of original works of art created by painters, illustrators, watercolour artists and or original printmakers concentrating upon the themes of 'Music' and 'Dance' within their art, such as portraits or studies of composers, musicians, singers and dancers, as well as fine representations of musical instruments used throughout the centuries.

Our Gallery, Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com offers a wide selection of international fine art. We sell original paintings, watercolors, drawings, monotypes, engravings, etchings, lithographs and other mediums of original graphic art. These works of art date from the Renaissance period to the contemporary art period. We guarantee the authenticity of every work of art 100%. Full documentation and certification is provided.

Music Portrayed in Art Index: This article is divided into two sections. Music being the first selection contains a listing and links for works of art depicting singers, musicians, music makers and their instruments. Throughout the centuries, music has been a subject of great examination and interest for many artists; for example, Theophile Steinlen contributed to music with his original lithographs to publishers of popular songs who would use them as cover art for their sheet music. Hartwell Yeargans collaborated with Duke Ellington and his Orchestra in a performance of music and paintings at the Festival of the Arts, Long Island University, New York. Mervin Jules was celebrated for his portrayals of the world of music - most particularly jazz and classical - becoming one of his major themes throughout the 1950's and 1960's. Then, there is the art by the British artist, Sir Hubert Von Herkomer who wrote a musical play, called, 'An Idyl' which proved to be a great success. Herkomer etched at least five works of art dealing with the play. Lastly there is William Hogarth's engraving entitled, 'A Chorus of Singers', where he portrays a gamut of facial expressions created by singers straining their voices to the limit. Hogarth has divided this delightful composition into four 'voices', the angelic singing of the boy sopranos, and the group of tenors, the three cheerful altos and the group of basses. Above them all stands the choirmaster in the ecstasy of song. This subject is endless and further information on the original works of art depicting human activities associated with music as portrayed in the world of art can be obtained by viewing our selection in our 'Music Portrayed in Art' directory.

Dance Portrayed in Art Index: The second selection is 'Dance' which contains a listing and links for works of art concentrating upon studies or portraits of professional dancers as well as depictions of people dancing in a variety of different fashions, such as, ballet, the tango, flamenco, the Hasidic dance, the salsa, the waltz, the rumba, as well as so many others. Some forms of dance still remain with us and others have disappeared with time. For example, ballerinas have been performing professionally since the ballet was invented, but fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, fads like the boogie and the twist have succumbed to posterity. Dancing is very distinctive in time and place and a matter of culture or religion. Like Music, it was created for pure pleasure. Dance is performed at different events, such as formal functions, wedding celebrations, and many other social festivities. No matter what people's motivation is for dancing, the results are certainly gratifying. Portrayals of people participating in the social activities associated with this marvellous genre are always appealing to the collector.

Dance cannot be achieved without involving some type of music, a tune, a jingle or a melody; as a result, you will frequently find a combination of these two art forms portrayed in a single painting, watercolour or graphic work of art. This doesn't signify that all depictions of music and dance are represented simultaneously. Although, it is interesting that at some point during their careers, most artists inevitably contribute works upon both subjects. Such is the case with Marti Castells Marti's "Pastoril" where he has combined both these elements to create a fine art deco woodcut. The German Renaissance artist, Georg Pencz, created a series of engravings depicting the "Seven Liberal Arts". Violeta Janes' paintings and drawings such as 'The Violinist and the 'Ballerina' will also be found in this category. Jose Varona, Honore, Guilbeau, Paul Honore and James Drummond Herbert also command a place in this section, as can be seen in their portrayals of dancers, singers, and musicians. These artists are highly regarded and included in museums, corporate and or private collections. Further information on the original works of art depicting studies or portraits of dancers as portrayed in the world of art can be obtained by viewing our selection in our 'Dance Portrayed in Art' directory.

The 'Music and Dance' artist index is set up in alphabetical order by the artist's last name. If you can't find what you are looking for here, please browse the image gallery or you can go to the animal, military, satirical or other pages set up for your convenience. You just might find something we have not included here.
