John Boydell: Boydell's first successful series of prints were mezzotints for the "Liber Veritas" and the "Houghton Gallery", but his largest and most ambitious compositions were for the 'Shakespeare Gallery'. During the 1780's and 1790's Boydell - then Lord Mayor of London - had embarked upon the most exhaustive publishing venture in the history of British art; the over one hundred large engravings dealing with Shakespearean themes. These were epic works of art concentrating mainly upon the great history and tragedy plays such as Macbeth, Hamlet and King Lear, and were designed or engraved by such well known artists as Henry Fuseli, George Romney and Richard Earlom.

The Century Company: The Century Company produced some of the greatest lithographic Art Nouveau posters for the Century Magazine during this period. The Century Company commissioned original graphic art from such great masters as Eugene Grassett, Louis John Rhead, George Wharton Edwards and others.

Condition:	Printed upon fine hand-made, laid paper and with margins trimmed to the plate-mark, as usual. Lettered with the name of the sitter,"Caesar D'Estrees S.R.E. Cardinalis Episcopus Albanensis Regiorum Ordinum Commendator / Offerebat Humillimus Servis / Christophorus Becquereau", and includes the production details, " de Troyes Pinxit / Edelinck Sculp. C.P.R. 1698 ". Containing several tears, both along the margins and within the engraved frame and image. All have been restored and reinforced with archival tape. As well, some staining exists along the margins to the right. Also bearing two collector's marks on the verso. One contains the date of 1830 and the signature, "Soliman". Apart from the necessary restoration, however, this impression of Caesar D'Estrees bears all the fine lines and silvery tones of a very early printing. It represents a prime example of the famous engraved art of Gerard Edelinck.

Cadart & Luquet in 1865. As one would expect from a proof impression this original etching is deeply printed with full tonal values. One slight hole (a flaw in the paper) exists in the bough of the tree to the upper right, else in good condition throughout. "Parc a Richmond, Angleterre" (Park in Richmond, England) represents a prime, original example of the etched art of Edwin Edwards.

Provenance:	From the collection of Roger Trlak and bearing his inventory number, T-459, on the verso. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972 he also opened the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona where he exhibited not only his own large collection of 19th and 20th century art but also held important exhibitions of many modern artists. These Included such major American and international printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak's closest friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright and Hans Burkhardt. Their original prints and paintings were constantly exhibited at the RST Gallery until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak's untimely death.

Bearing an unidentified collector's seal on the verso. As is usual with woodcuts from this early era there is some fading of colors and examples of rubbing and creasing within the actual image. Nevertheless, A Courtesan and Two Kamuro Looking at a Doll is a beautiful example from the final years of Golden Age art and a prime, original example of the art of Kikugawa Eizan.

Edition:	The reason why The Temple of Hera contains no title nor publisher's address is that it is a Trial Proof impression. Trial Proofs were made before the actual edition was struck and therefore represent one of the first impressions taken from the stone. Thus in the outer margins (under the matte) both registration marks and a chromolithographic colour bar exist. To have such an early impression of such a large and beautiful chromolithograph is not common.

Condition:	First and sole state and printed upon fine laid paper as published in Geneva in the small edition of 95 impressions in 1954 and with wide margins. Containing several slight creases in the outer margins as well as two ink stains on the verso of the paper. As the ink is the same color as that used for the actual lithograph, it is likely that the staining took place during the printing process. Fortunately, the paper is quite thick and only two small spots have bled through to the recto. This may be seen to the upper left, adjacent to the outstretched wing of the second highest pigeon and the second is at the top right corner margin, which does not intrude into the image itself. On the verso as well, slight paper scuffing exists along the back upper margin, due to previous matting. Else it is in good condition throughout. Signed by Hans Erni in pencil and marked 'Eprueve d'artiste' (Artist Proof) along the lower margins in the lower left corner. "Huit Pigeons" (Eight Pigeons) is a beautiful example of Hans Erni's creative genius.
