Lynd Ward (Lynd Kendall Ward)

Lynd Ward - Historic Christ Church at Middleton

Historic Christ Church at Middleton

Lynd Ward's "Historic Christ Church at Middleton" is one of his largest and most impressive, individual wood engravings. Lynd Ward's genius has captured a living presence within both the church and its surrounding landscape, a presence borne of generations of past events and occurrences. With its superb play of light and darkness, this is truly one of Lynd Ward's finest wood engravings.

"Historic Christ Church at Middleton" is an original wood engraving created by one of the finest American wood engravers of the twentieth century, Lynd Kendall Ward. This impression was published around 1960 and is signed, titled and numbered in pencil by Lynd Ward.

Title: Historic Christ Church at Middleton
Artist: Ward, Lynd Kendall 'Lynd Ward' (Chicago, 1905 - 1985)
Date: c. 1960
Medium: Original Wood Engraving
Note:

"Looking back enables us to spin the long strand of cause and effect that can be called history for humanity in general and destiny for the individual in particular. There is nothing more exhilarating than the discovery of an overall purpose behind the seemingly unrelated events that comprise the past of either a nation or a citizen."

Lynd Ward.

Lynd Kendall Ward 'Lynd Ward': The son of a Methodist preacher, Lynd Kendall Ward moved from Chicago to Massachusetts at an early age. He graduated in 1926 from Columbia University where he chose illustrating and the graphic arts as his major area of interest. Lynd Ward then finished his education in Leipzig, Germany, where he studied wood engraving techniques under Hans Alexander Mueller.
Returning to America, Lynd Ward quickly set to work upon his first book, "God's Man: A Novel in Woodcuts", first published in 1929. This book and the several which followed it (such as, "Madman's Drum", "Wild Pilgrimage" and "Vertigo") were comprised solely of Lynd Ward's woodcuts which constructed stories through imagery alone. These fantastic visual novels established Ward's reputation as one of the leading psychological artists of any era.
During the following years Lynd Ward illustrated many more novels (some of which he wrote) and produced individual woodcuts, wood engravings, paintings and drawings. He received such prestigious awards as the Library of Congress Award (1948), the National Academy of Design Print Award (1949), the New York Times Best Illustrated Award (1973) and the Regina Award (1975).
Today Lynd Ward is ranked among the finest American wood engravers of the twentieth century, along with Rockwell Kent, Paul Landacre and Fritz Eichenberg. But what sets his art apart is its powerful psychological intensity which, if anything, is most comparable to the great writings of Poe, Melville and Hawthorne. Like these classic American writers, Lynd Ward was most concerned with the inner workings and outward manifestations of the unconscious, and of how the past shapes the present.
This element clearly is in evidence in one of Lynd Ward's largest and most impressive, individual wood engravings, "Historic Christ Church at Middletown". This is anything but a simple architectural study. Rather, Ward's genius has captured a living presence within both the church and its surrounding landscape, a presence borne of generations of past events and occurrences. With its superb play of light and darkness, this is truly one of the finest wood engravings I have seen.
