Upon his return to the United States he became a founding member of New York's influential Art Students' League (1875) and served as its first president. As well, Frank Waller served as honorary secretary of the Egypt Exploration Fund Society. He was also a noted architect and a Fellow of both the Academy of Design and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Source: Portfolio, Some Modern Etchings: Frank Waller's, "Testing the Toledo" was commissioned by the New York publisher, White Stokes & Allen in 1884. Besides Waller's original etching, other original etchings included in this portfolio are "Never too Late to Mend" drawn and etched by James Wells Champney, "A Tramp" drawn and etched by Gabrielle D. Clements, "The Clarionet Player" by Katherine Levine based upon a design drawn by H. Kauffmann, "An Old Master at Last" by Elliot Daingerfield designed by Walter Satterlee, "Driving the Sheep" drawn and etched by John Austin Sands Monks, "My Ain Fireside" drawn and etched by S. G. McCutcheon, "Portrait of Rembrandt" by F.S. King based upon Rembrandt's painting, "The Evening Star" drawn and etched by Walter Satterlee, and "The Ponte San Trinita" drawn and etched by Joseph Pennell.
  J. R. W. Hitchcock, who wrote the text for the folio Some Modern Etchings writes; "In the carefully studied fifteenth-century costume chosen by Mr. Waller, the rich folds of the velvet and sheen of the satin in the slashed sleeves of the doublet and in the short cloak, with the texture of the trunk hose, the grain of the curious Spanish leather boots, and the peacock feathers on the hat offer enticing yet provoking problems to the etcher's art.".
Hitchcock also wrote that Frank Waller disliked making changes to his plates. For example, in the case of Testing the Toledo, he noted that Waller indicated that there were very slight alterations and additions made after his first drawing on copper, which was bitten in four bitings, the bath consisting of the Dutch mordant. Waller believed that there was less of a chance for disappointment while printing if the plate had not been over-worked.
