Jules Jacques Veyrassat - Le Ramassage des Foins The Hay Wagon

Le Ramassage des Foins (The Hay Wagon)

Jules Jacques Veyrassat's, original etching, Le Ramassage des Foins (The Hay Wagon) is printed upon thick, hand-made laid paper and is signed by Jules Veyrassat in the plate along the lower margin. This charming scene depicts the workers filling their hay wagon in the farming plains of central France. is a fine, original example of the nineteenth century landscape and animal art created by the French artist, Jules Jacques Veyrassat. This etching is also listed under the title 'Le Ramassage des Foins' which actually means 'Hay Collecting'.

Title: Le Ramassage des Foins (The Hay Wagon)
Artist: Veyrassat, Jules Jacques 'Jules Veyrassat' (Paris, 1828 - 1893)
Date: 1870
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Jules Jacques Veyrassat 'Jules Veyrassat': One of France's most decorated painters and etchers of nature and landscape, Jules Jacques Veyrassat studied art in his native Paris under Lehman. He exhibited his first paintings there at the Paris Salon in 1848. Jules Veyrassat's career as an original etcher began in the early 1860's and these works of art quickly gained for him an international reputation as he was awarded medals for his etchings in both 1866 and 1869. As well, the French government awarded him the prestigious Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1878.
As both an etcher and a painter, Jules Veyrassat has most often been associated with the famous French Barbizon school, most particularly with the rural art of Charles Jacque and J. F. Millet. But it was not the forests of Barbizon that drew Veyrassat's attention; rather most of his art depicts the farming plains of central France. And it was in this sphere that Veyrassat's true genius developed, particularly in his brilliant depictions of the working horse. This original etching is also listed under the title 'Le Ramassage des Foins' which actually means 'Hay Collecting' and is very similar to one of his paintings sans the donkey (also listed under the title, Le Ramassage des Foins.) The Musee Carnavalet, Histoire de Paris includes an impression of this original etching in its collection, Numero d'inventaire: G35669.

Although he never traveled abroad, Jules Jacques Veyrassat's fame was probably even greater in Britain than in France. The great English writer upon the art of etching, P. G. Hamerton, commissioned Veyrassat to create etchings for a number of his books, including, Eaux-Fortes Par Veyrassat (1866), Chapters on Animals (1874) and Etching and Etchers (1880). Also, the English writer, Frederick Wedmore, championed Veyrassat's delicate miniature art. He wrote,

“His etchings when they are delightful, are invariably small. Perfect unity belonged to each piece: each piece was lyric of the country -- a record beautiful and real. They comprise some of the most distinguished studies wrought in all the years since men have etched.” *
