Approaching Waves

Birgit Skiold's "Approaching Waves" is an original embossed etching published in 1970. It hails from the collection of Roger Trlak and bears his inventory number on the verso. This etching is printed upon a heavy, pure rag paper and with wide, deckled margins. Bearing an unidentified blindstamp in the paper in the lower left corner. This impression is signed, titled, dated and numbered by the artist in pencil. "Approaching Waves" is a fine, original example of the contemporary art created by the Swedish artist, Birgit Skiold.

Note: Birgit Skiold: A famous Swedish printmaker, painter and photographer, Birgit Skiold played a leading role in the development of British printmaking during the 1950's decade through to the 1980's. She was the founder of one of the first printmaking workshops in Britain (1958) and also a founding member of the Printmakers Council (1965). In these capacities she taught and became a primary influence upon many of England's leading artists of today.
  During her distinguished career Birgit Skiold's art was the subject of exhibitions around the world. Exhibitions of her fine etchings took place at the University of Wisconsin (1964), the Oxford Gallery, Oxford, England (1971), the Wellington Academy, New Zealand (1972), Musee d'Art et d'Histoire, Geneva, Switzerland (1974), Galleria Grafica, Tokyo (1975), the Arts Council of Great Britain (1978), Norske Internationale Grafikk Biennale, Norway (1974, 1976 & 1980), Grafiktriennalen, Stockholm (1974 & 1980), and major retrospectives of her art took place in England in 1984, 1999 and 2002. Her fine etchings are now included in many major public collections in Britain, Europe and the United States.
  Approaching Waves is indicative of Birgit Skiold's famous etching techniques. Using both deep etching and embossing she has here created a masterwork of abstract simplicity and emotional power.
Provenance: Approaching Waves originates from the collection of Roger Trlak and bearing his inventory number, 'T-877', on the verso. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972 he also opened the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona where he exhibited not only his own large collection of mostly contemporary art but also held important exhibitions of many modern artists. These Included such major American and international printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni, Birgit Skiold and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak's closest friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright and Hans Burkhardt. Their original prints and paintings were constantly exhibited at the RST Gallery until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak's untimely death.

Condition: Printed upon a heavy, pure rag paper and with wide, deckled margins. Bearing an unidentified blindstamp in the paper in the lower left corner. Containing two vertical lines of glue staining on the verso of the paper in the outer margins. These stains are only very faintly apparent on the recto side. Else, a finely printed impression (no doubt, printed by Skiold) and in very good condition throughout. Signed, titled, dated and numbered, '25/25', by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. Approaching Waves is a superb, original example of the famous art of Birgit Skiold.
