Yamaguchi Ryoshu original Japanese woodcut, "A Noh Actor" is printed on fine laid paper and with full margins as published in Kyoto around 1955. It hails from Noh Play Explanation and Stories Series 1 published by Kyoto Hanga. This impression is signed in the woodcut and bears the artist's seal.

Yamaguchi Ryoshu's woodcuts are important not only as fine and precise records of the Noh drama but as beautifully crafted works of art. Employing an extensive range of colouration, including silver, each of Ryoshu's Noh woodcuts represent a great example of mid twentieth century Japanese printmaking.

Note:	Yamaguchi Ryoshu: The son of a well known Noh actor, Yamaguchi Ryoshu first studied Noh performance techniques under his father and at the Okura School. At the same time he showed great artistic talents and studied art under the historical painter, Taniguchi. Following both careers Yamaguchi Ryoshu began exhibiting his art in both Kyoto and Tokyo during the 1930's. He turned to the medium of the original woodcut shortly after the end of the Second World War and produced many fine prints.
	In 1954 Ryoshu was commissioned by the publisher, Kyoto Hanga-In, to create a set of six woodcuts dealing with actors and characters from Noh plays. The portfolio of woodcuts proved to be very successful and the artist was again commissioned to make several more sets of six prints each during the mid 1950's. This original woodcut was created for one of these sets.
	Yamaguchi Ryoshu's woodcuts are important not only as fine and precise records of the Noh drama but as beautifully crafted works of art.
