John Romney

John Romney - Count Platoff

Count Platoff, Hetman of the Cossacks (Allied Commanders of the Napoleonic War)

John Romney "Count Platoff, Hetman of the Cossacks" (Allied Commanders of the Napoleonic War): This original etching is printed on early nineteenth century wove paper and hails from a set of original hand-coloured etchings depicting the allied commanders of the Napoleonic War published by Richard Evans, 1815 through 1816 and bears his address and publication date.

This etching depicts Count Matvei Platov in battle. It is a unique and important example of military history of the allied commanders from the Napoleonic Wars. Count Platov was the leader of the Don Cossacks and a feared commander of cavalry. He also participated in the Battle of Leipzig and joined the Allied occupation force of Paris.

Title: Count Platoff, Hetman of the Cossacks (Allied Commanders of the Napoleonic War)
Artist: Romney, John (Chester, 1786-1863)
Date: 1815 & 1816
Medium: Original Hand-Coloured Etching
Publisher: Richard Evans, Whites Row Spitafields
Note: Count Platoff, Hetman of the Cossacks (Born, 1751 - Died, 1818): Matvei Platov was the leader (or 'Hetman') of the Don Cossacks and a feared commander of cavalry. Platov's tactics became famous in the 1812 French invasion of Russia, when his men lived off the land and constantly harried the much stronger French forces. Using the harsh Russian winter to its best advantage, Platov continually punished the beleaguered French infantry on its retreat from Moscow.
Count Platov also participated in the Battle of Leipzig and joined the Allied occupation force of Paris.
Set of eight etchings: Each of these contemporary etchings was published individually from May of 1815 and into 1816 and were coloured by hand at that time. Richard Evans, a well known early nineteenth century London publisher, issued the set. The etchers were John Romney (Chester, 1786-1863) and Charles James Canton. Obviously, the historic importance of these original hand-coloured etchings cannot be overlooked. To have so many portrayals of leading commanders and statesmen made at the time of the battle of Waterloo is indeed most rare.
This most valuable set of eight hand coloured equestrian etchings of allied commanders was created shortly after most were in London to discuss the allied occupation of France and the establishment of a new, post Napoleonic Europe. History, however, tells us that these festivities were short-lived for at that moment Napoleon was planning his escape from the island of Elba. He would not be completely stopped until the famous battle of Waterloo in June of 1815.
Size: 12 X 9 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Each of these original hand-coloured engravings is printed on early nineteenth century wove paper and with large margins extending beyond the plate-mark on all sides. A former owner has backed them upon board. Apart from slight smudging and foxing to several etchings, this set is in excellent condition throughout, retaining all its fine lines and rich, early hand colouring. All eight etchings bear Richard Evans's address and publication dates from May of 1815 through 1816. Clearly these early equestrian etchings of allied commanders form a most unique and important example of military history from the Napoleonic Wars.
