Beynon Puddicombe

Beynon Puddicombe - Ruins Near Rome

Ruins Near Rome

Beynon Puddicombe's original pen and ink drawing, "Ruins Near Rome" is a masterful architectural miniature work of art. It was created by the British artist around 1858. "Ruins Near Rome" is drawn upon thick nineteenth century wove paper and with large lace-worked margins.

Title: Ruins Near Rome
Artist: Puddicombe, Beynon (London, active, 1850 - 1870)
Date: c. 1858
Medium: Original Pen & Ink Drawing
Note: Beynon Puddicombe exhibited his art in London during the 1850's and 1860's. It is known that he toured both the Italian peninsula and the Holy Land from 1856 through 1859. This original drawing was mounted in a book in the possession of the artist detailing his tour. Some of the drawings and watercolours were signed and dated and many contained decorative lace-work borders. Each work of art was superbly rendered making them amongst the finest miniature views I have encountered from this period.
The long and fruitful tradition of miniature painting and drawing finds most of its finest artists in Britain. From the Elizabethan era onwards such great painters as Nicholas Hilliard, Isaac Oliver, Samuel Cooper, Richard Cosway, Ozias Humphry and John Smart created masterpieces in this genre. But until the reign of Queen Victoria, miniature artists confined themselves almost exclusively to the portrait. For British artists the opportunity to tour European countries had only begun in the mid eighteenth century and it wasn't until the nineteenth century that travel was widely available. By the midway point of the century hundreds of English artists were employed by the London publishers to execute drawings of foreign points of interest which were then engraved for illustrated topographical books. The customs and sights of all European countries were of great value, but undoubtedly the most popular places were Italy and the Holy Land.
Miniature artists such as Beynon Puddicombe now rendered these sights with the precision and accuracy which had once been confined to portrayals. As one can see from this original example, the results were very remarkable in the hands of a gifted miniaturist. Detail, perspective and shading are all conveyed with both astonishing detail and artistry.
Size: 3 X 4 1/2 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
