Thomas Cooper Moore

Moore - St. Anne’s Well or Robin Hood’s Well

St. Anne's Well (Robin Hood's Well)

Thomas Cooper Moore's "St. Anne's Well (Robin Hood's Well)" is an original pen and ink drawing drawn upon nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as created by the artist in 1856. It is signed by Thomas Moore in the lower left corner and titled and dated by him under the drawing. This landscape view is a superb, original example of the Nottingham art created by the British artist, Thomas Cooper Moore.

St. Ann's Well is situated about two miles north-east of Nottingham. This well is known to have been in existence as early as 1287. It's first name was apparently 'Owswell', but around 1500 it was commonly called, 'Robin Hood's Well', due to a reputed affray that occurred there involving Robin Hood and his men.

Title: St. Anne's Well (Robin Hood's Well)
Artist: Moore, Thomas Cooper (Nottingham, England, 1827 - 1901)
Date: 1856
Medium: Original Pen and Ink Drawing
Note: Thomas Cooper Moore: A nineteenth century painter, watercolourist and pen and ink artist, Thomas Cooper Moore first trained as an architect before dedicating himself to art. He was mainly self taught in this field but later started the first sketching class in Nottingham and was a founder of the Nottingham Society of artists.
Most of Thomas Cooper Moore's landscapes were produced in or around the Wilford - Nottingham area. During this time and later in the nineteenth century his art was exhibited in Sheffield, Nottingham, Birmingham and London. T. C. Moore was also the father and teacher of Claude T. S. Moore (1853-1901), who became very well known for his paintings and watercolours of the Thames and other river views. A number of Thomas Cooper Moore's drawings and watercolours are housed in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
This original Thomas Cooper Moore drawing was found mounted in an artist's book of drawings and watercolours. Altogether around five pen and ink drawings by T. C. Moore were included. Other titles were, At Wilford and Gordon's Wharf.
A Note on St. Ann's Well: Situated about two miles north-east of Nottingham, this well is known to have been in existence as early as 1287. It's first name was apparently 'Owswell', but around 1500 it was commonly called, 'Robin Hood's Well', due to a reputed affray that occurred there involving Robin Hood and his men. By the end of the 18th century the water from the well was said to have healing powers -- "The water is very old. It will kill a toad. It is used by those who are afflicted with rheumatic pains." During the nineteenth century the adjoining area was used first as a rowdy pub (until numerous complaints closed it down) and later as a tea room. All buildings were demolished in 1887, when a railway line was built over the site. The well's location was then lost for almost a century until, in 1987, it was uncovered in the car park of a public house in Wells Road. Efforts are now under way to restore this historically important site.
Thomas Cooper Moore's drawing captures the area of St. Anne's Well and its long lost buildings in the year, 1856.
