Elias Martin

Elias Martin - Architectural Fantasy

Architectural Fantasy

Elias Martin's architectural fantasy, finished in soft blue and green washes, shows his mastery of the demanding art of miniature composition. Despite the many fanciful details contained within such a small scale, he has managed to convey a sense of great space. Elias Martin's talents for inventiveness are best seen in small, intimate watercolours such as this original and valuable example.

Title: Architectural Fantasy
Artist: Martin, Elias (Stockholm, 1739 - 1818)
Date: C. 1790
Medium: Original Watercolor
Note: Elias Martin: Although Elias Martin was born and died in Sweden, he is primarily considered an English painter. Beginning his career as an apprentice cabinet-maker, Martin went to Paris in order to study art in 1766. He first came to London in 1768 and began to exhibit his art both at the Royal Academy and at the Society of Artists. Elias Martin was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1770.
During this time, Elias Martin gained a large reputation both for his watercolours and for his paintings. In 1772, the distinguished Horace Walpole wrote of Martin: "Al Swede, excellent for character and caricature in washed drawings". *
Elias Martin left London for his native Stockholm in 1780 when he received the honour of being appointed the 'Royal Painter to the King of Sweden'. However, he returned to England in 1788, first living in Bath for three years before residing again in London. Finally, Elias Martin returned for good to Stockholm in 1797, where he published engravings of his watercolour views in partnership with his brother.
Elias Martin's fame rests most strongly upon his figure studies and landscapes. He was a master of both large watercolours and miniatures. Not surprisingly, most of his work is now housed in major British museums, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which includes Elias Martin's famous 1771 watercolour of Westminster Bridge.
This original miniature watercolour of an architectural fantasy was found in one of Elias Martin's own artist sketchbooks. The book contained several mounted watercolour fantasies dealing with antique ruins, a small, unsigned landscape and a series of engraved views many of which were based upon Elias Martin's designs. The architectural fantasies were signed either 'E. Martin' or 'E. Martin, No. 6, London Road', thus signifying that this original watercolour may be dated between 1770 and no later than Martin's return to Stockholm in 1797. Here, Martin has finished this work of art in soft blue and green washes, showing his mastery of the demanding art of miniature composition. Despite the many fanciful details contained within such a small scale, he has managed to convey a sense of great space.
