Norman Kent

Norman Kent - Rupert Brooke

Rupert Brooke

Norman Kent's original woodcut, portrait of Rupert Brooke was created by the American artist for the October 1929 issue of the The Print Connoisseur. This original woodcut is printed upon laid, watermarked paper and with full margins as published by The Print Connoisseur in an edition of one hundred impressions.

Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) was educated at Rugby School and King's College Cambridge. He published his first volume of verse in 1911 and within several years rose to become one of England's great young poets. He visited the United States in 1913 and his Letters from America was published several years later.

Title: Rupert Brooke
Artist: Kent, Norman (Pittsburgh, 1903 - Rochester, NY, 1972)
Date: 1929
Medium: Original Woodcut
Publisher: The Print Connoisseur, New York
Note: Norman Kent: A talented watercolorist, illustrator, painter, woodcut and linocut artist, Norman Kent graduated with honors from the Mechanics Institute, Rochester, NY, in 1925. Winning a competition he was awarded a full scholarship to the Art Students League in New York where he finished his studies under both Leftwich Dodge and Alan Lewis. Lewis was a great woodcut artist in his own right and was a key influence upon the development of Norman Kent's art.
After completing his education Kent moved to Buffalo where he worked as a free lance illustrator for a number of magazines, such as Outlook and Fortune. His first one-man show was held in Buffalo at the Grosvenor Library in 1928. In 1929 Norman Kent moved to nearby Rochester, NY, and exhibited his art throughout the United States. Galleries in which his fine art is represented include The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Baltimore Museum, the New York Public Library, the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery and Syracuse University. Recently, Georgetown University acquired an almost complete collection of Kent's woodcuts and linocuts and lists more than two hundred works of his graphic art in its permanent collection.
Norman Kent was the long time editor of American Artist Magazine. He was also a friend and working companion to such artists as Charles Burchfield and Andrew Wyeth. Burchfield, in fact, championed Kent's art and wrote several perceptive articles upon his woodcuts and linocuts. In one such article Burchfield commented,

"Mr. Kent, it is plainly apparent has all the elements necessary for the making of an excellent engraver -- draftsmanship, construction, skill in cutting, etc., but to me one of the outstanding qualities of his work is his feeling for bold pattern and design, a quality that I believe will carry him far. This is to be seen in both his portraits and landscapes. He has the true 'block' feeling; you would not hesitate about what his medium was if you did not know. The material he uses seems to matter little, whether it is wood or linoleum." *

Rupert Brooke represents a fine example of Kent's working methods. Charles Burchfield again writes,

"Some of his things seem to have been cut directly, without previous sketch or layout, so bold and spontaneous are they, ... I have this same feeling about his portrait studies, - a flash of broad black and white - one thinks of swift brush strokes - and the character of the sitter is before you, sure and strong." **

Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) was educated at Rugby School and King's College Cambridge. He published his first volume of verse in 1911 and within several years rose to become one of England's great young poets. He visited the United States in 1913 and his Letters from America was published several years later. When the First World War broke out in 1914 Brooke enlisted in the British Army. He saw action in the unsuccessful defense of Antwerp and in 1915 he was sent to the theatre of war in the Mediterranean. He died in action at Scyros several months later. His Collected Poems was published in 1918 and include some of the finest verses written upon World War One.
The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue and the more expensive, limited editions of 100 each contained a signed impression in pencil by the artist. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, Frank Benson, Norman Kent, Lynd Ward, Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
'For the October, 1929 limited edition issue The Print Connoisseur commissioned Norman Kent for six original prints -- four woodcuts and two linocuts. Pierrot Peers Out was the only work of art to be printed in colors and hand signed by the artist. The other original prints were signed in the block with Kent's distinctive monogram. These prints are entitled, Rupert Brooke, Gloucester, Canal Boat, Willows and Low Tide.
