David Kandel

David Kandel - Roter Wegerich or Red Plantain Hieronymus Bock's Book of Herbs

Roter Wegerich: Spiker Wegerich, Red Plantain: Spiked Plantain (Hieronymus Bock's Book of Herbs)

David Kandel's sixteenth century woodcut, "Roter Wegerich: Spiker Wegerich" (Red Plantain: Spiked Plantain) depicts two examples from the natural order of Plantaginaceae, of which there are more than 200 species. Plantains were highly prized for their healing virtues, most particularly as a vulnery for mending wounds. Through the centuries it has also been used as a cure for malignant ulcers, fevers, snake bites, epilepsy and even lethargy.

"Roter Wegerich: Spiker Wegerich" (Red Plantain: Spiked Plantain) was created by the German Renaissance artist, David Kandel for Hieronymus Bock's famous work, the "Kreuterbuch" (Book of Herbs). The first illustrated edition appeared in 1546 and contained 477 woodcuts. Subsequent editions were published in 1551, 1577, 1580, 1587 and 1595, with the woodcuts expanding to the number of 530. This impression of "Roter Wegerich: Spiker Wegerich" originates from the 1580 publication.

Note: David Kandel: One of the finest aspects of the Renaissance was the search for knowledge of the natural world. Equally at play in both the arts and the sciences this element of inquiry forever altered and broadened our way of seeing. David Kandel was one of the earliest and finest pioneers of botanical art. His beautifully rendered woodcuts opened the eyes and minds of many as to the wonderful varieties of plant life. Yet, as is the case with many Renaissance artists, surprisingly little is known of his life.
David Kandel was the son of a Strasbourg citizen and was probably born in that city. We know he was married in 1554 and owned a house in 1587. His activities as a woodcut artist are varied. He designed several portraits, some Biblical scenes, animal studies, topographical views and a number of early maps. His finest work, however, is in the field of botanical illustration, such as his woodcuts for the "Kreuterbuch" of Hieronymus Bock. "Roter Wegerich: Spiker Wegerich" (Red Plantain: Spiked Plantain) hails from this important opus which critically examined a large number of plants by drawing upon both recent investigations and the theories of medieval and ancient scholars.
In total, David Kandel designed 530 woodcuts for the "Kreuterbuch". The superb accuracy and artistry of these sixteenth century woodcuts set new standards for botanical art. In each the foliage, flowers and even the root systems are handled with a combination of detail and delicacy which is indicative of great Renaissance art.
