William Hogarth & Francois Morellon de la Cave

William Hogarth and Francois Morellon de la Cave - The Polling - Four Prints of an Election

The Polling - Four Prints of an Election, Plate 3 (Complete Set of Four Engravings)

William Hogarth and Francois Morellon de la Cave (Le Cave) - The Polling (Four Prints of an Election, Plate 3): Hogarth's third engraving illuminates how a member of Parliament is elected. First in line at the polling station is a soldier who has lost three of his limbs. A clerk tries to subdue his laughter as the veteran places his hook on the Bible. Lawyers from opposing parties flank him and argue the validity of his 'handless' oath. Next an imbecile locked in his chair is taking the oath. He is being prompted by an individual standing behind him whose leg is also manacled to the chair. Third in line is a dying man who is dragged up the stairs by his nurses. One is lacking his nose, a symptom of advanced venereal disease. A blind man, guided by his stick and a boy, walk up the stairs. Behind him is a cripple.

The two candidates appear in highchairs with a sleeping beadle between them. Other men around them share a ballad or drink merrily together. In the background, 'Britannia's' coach has broken down and is about to overturn. Involved in their game of cards, the coachmen ignore the dangerous situation. The ship of state is not in safe hands.

Four Prints of an Election consists of four related engravings published by William Hogarth from February, 1755 to February, 1758. It represents Hogarth's last great set of engravings and is loosely based upon the riotous Oxfordshire election of 1754, where the Whig candidate, the Duke of Marlborough, challenged the incumbent Tories. As in most of Hogarth's works of art, however, the series is not concerned with a particular event but aims to uncover political and aristocratic methods to bribe, coerce and generally exploit the populace. Thus this eighteenth century election shares many similar chords with our contemporary politicians and voters.

William Hogarth engraved plate 1 by himself and assisted other engravers in plates 3 and 4. For mainly background work, however, he commissioned the technical expertise of other engravers working in London to complete the series. They are, Charles Grignion, the Elder (born, 1717 - died, 1810), (plate 2), Francois Morellon de la Cave 'Le Cave' (1706-1766;fl), (plate 3), and Francois Antoine Aveline 'F. Aviline' (Paris, 1718/27? - London, 1780), (plate 4).

The Polling, Four Prints of an Election, Plate 3 was engraved by William Hogarth and Francois Morellon de la Cave (Le Cave). This original engraving is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. It is a fine, original example of the satirical art created by the British artists, William Hogarth and Francois Morellon de la Cave (Le Cave). The Polling, Plate III; Paulson Catalogue #200, Third and Final State from Four Prints of an Election (Complete set of Four Original Engravings).

Note: William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, Four Prints of an Election, The Four Times of the Day and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his.
Training first as an engraver, Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Harlot's Progress (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps.
Francois Morellon de la Cave (fl. c. 1700-1766): An 18th century printmaker and book illustrator of French origin, Francois Morellon de la Cave was actually born in Amsterdam. He was a student of the French eighteenth century artist, Bernard Picart. While in the Netherlands, de la Cave engraved the Dutch edition of Voltaire's La Henriade. It is not known when he moved to London but he engraved The Foundlings; a headpiece to a Power of Attorney for the Foundling Hospital after William Hogarth in (1739). Francois Morellon de la Cave is best known for his allegorical engravings, portraits and book illustrations, such as his Allegorical engraving after Bernard Picart (1726-1740), a landscape with a bull entitled, Aldernay Bull (1706-1707), Portrait of William IV, Prince of Orange and Nassau as a boy after Guillaume Francois Laurent Debrie (1728), Portrait of John Locke after Sir Godfrey Kneller (1734), The Perspective View as intended to be Finish'd of the Amphitheatrical Building with part of the Garden in which it is Erected at Chelsea, designed by William Jones (1748), The Polling, plate 4 for the Four Prints of an Election engraved by both William Hogarth and Francois Morellon de la Cave (1758), as well as many other graphic works of art. Note: Bryan's Dictionary has him listed under (Morellan, Spelled with an a), Francois Morellan de la Cave.
