Analysis of Beauty: Plate 1 (Complete Set of Two Engravings)

William Hogarth's Analysis of Beauty Plate 1: The opening engraving for Analysis of Beauty has as its central scene a courtyard filled with some of the most famous works of classical sculpture. It is believed to have been inspired by a passage in Socrates' analysis of beauty based upon art objects in the yard of a friend. In Hogarth's 'yard' the great sculpture is intermingled with various, often comic, contemporary art objects. In the centre (#13) is the Medicean Venus. To the right (#19), a statue of Julius Caesar is being hoisted by a pulley. Beside him stands the famous Apollo Belvedere (#12). To the extreme right a contemporary judge presides with his foot on a cherub (#16). A second cherub, with a gallows in his hand, wipes tears from his eyes with the judge's robe.

Behind Venus is of course the Laocoon (#9). Below Venus lie statues of a sphinx (#21) and the drunken Silenus (#107). In the foreground (#54) is Michaelangelo's torso. To the left (#6) is a statue of Antonius who is accompanied by a contemporary dancing master (#7). Above them is the Farnese Hercules (#3). Another Hercules is seen in the bust (#4) to the extreme left.

Complimenting these classical masterpieces is a modern shoe and stocking (#68), illustrations of fashionable foibles and grimaces (#20, 17 and 18), and Albrecht Durer's illustrations of anatomy (#55).

The key to all these objects of art and to the many images around the borders is found in the upper central image (#26) of a serpentine line winding around a cone. For Hogarth the winding line formed the essential element of the beautiful in art. All objects delineated in this masterful engraving (both serious and absurd) illustrate Hogarth's theory of his aesthetic.

The set of two Analysis of Beauty engravings take us to the heart of William Hogarth's aesthetics. They were created by the artist as accompanying illustrations to his analytical book of the same name, first published in 1753. Proving to be very popular, however, they were also sold separately from the book.

Analysis of Beauty: Plate 1 was both designed and engraved by William Hogarth. This original engraving is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. Note: William Hogarth: The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction. He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art. Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages of Cruelty, Four Prints of an Election, The Four Times of the Day and a host of others are crucial to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our society as they were to his.
  Training first as an engraver, Hogarth became an independent illustrator as early as 1720. In his spare time he studied painting techniques, notably under Sir James Thornhill. By 1730 he established himself as a portrait painter. Yet at the same time Hogarth began creating sets of anecdotal pictures which brilliantly satirized society and its activities. The first such set, A Harlot's Progress (1732), gained for Hogarth a strong and lasting national reputation. During the following decades he both painted and engraved individual works and sets of images which forged the cornerstone for English satirical art. Such great masters as Rowlandson, Gillray, Heath and Cruikshank followed in Hogarth's footsteps.

Condition: Printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published by William Heath in 1822. One should take note that Heath was the last printer to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies of these original graphic works of art.
  These original impressions from the complete set of Analysis of Beauty contain very faint foxing and tears in the outer margins. There is no foxing within the actual platemarks. Water staining is also apparent in the lower left corners of the margins, well away from the actual engravings. Else, both of these large and important Hogarth engravings are in good condition throughout.
