Mabel Hewit

Mabel Hewit - At Shetford

At Shetford

Mabel Hewit's original linocut, "At Shetford" is an accomplished work of art from the American Depession era. In this landacape, the artist sharply contrasts the forms of the trees and house with the horizontal lines of the walkway and field. Such bold simplification borders on the abstract is an intriguing example of the art of the Provincetown printmakers. "At Shetford" is printed upon mulberry paper and with full margins as created by the artist in Provincetown around 1935. It is titled and signed "Mabel A. Hewit" by Hewit in pencil along the lower margin.

Note: Mabel Amelia Hewit, also known as 'Mabel Hewit', 'Mabel A. Hewit': It is presently not known where Mabel Hewit was born or who she studied under, but by the Depression era of the 1930's, she was living and working at the artist's colony in Provincetown, Massachusetts. At this time the Provincetown Art Association was a major arts center, particularly in the medium of original printmaking. Artists who worked and exhibited in Provincetown during this period included such printmakers as Gustave Baumann, Ethel Mars, Bror Julius Olsson Nordfeldt and Blanche Lazzell. Blanche Lazzell (1878-1956) is of particular interest because she taught woodcut and linocut techniques to Mabel Hewit. Lazzell was also perhaps the first American woman printmaker to experiment with non-representational forms, particularly Cubist elements.
During the 1930's and 1940's Mabel A. Hewit worked mostly in the mediums of lithography, woodcut and linocut. In the latter two mediums some of her prints bear similar elements with those of her famous teacher. At Shetford, for instance, sharply contrasts the forms of the trees and house with the horizontal lines of the walkway and field. Such bold simplification borders on the abstract. At Shetford is thus a most intriguing example of the art of the Provincetown printmakers.
