School of Thomas Theodore Heine - Discussing the Fate of Germany

Discussing the Fate of Germany

"Discussing the Fate of Germany" School of Thomas Theodore Heine is an original pen & ink with graphite & wash drawing created in 1924. This drawing hails from the Munich gallery of Rudolf Aurich and bears his stamp on the former backing.

Title: Discussing the Fate of Germany
Artist: Heine, Thomas Theodore (Leipzig, 1867 - Stockholm, 1948)
Date: 1924
Medium: Original Pen & Ink With Graphite & Wash Drawing
Note: Thomas Theodore Heine: Undoubtedly the strongest force in early twentieth century German satirical art and caricature was the widely read periodical, Simplicissimus. Founded in Munich in 1896, Simplicissimus took aim at the reigning classes that promoted nationalism and militarism -- the generals, Junkers, monarchists, industrialists, and political and religious leaders. Writers for this periodical included Thomas Mann, Rainer Maria Rilke and Hermann Hesse. Its contributing artists were no less illustrious as they included Ernst Barlach, Alfred Kubin, Bruno Paul, Eduard Thony, Olaf Gulbransson and Thomas Theodore Heine.
Thomas Theodore Heine, in fact, was a co-founder of Simplicissimus and epitomized the art of this journal for many of its readers. After training as a painter and working for illustrated papers such as Die Jugend, Heine joined Simpicissimus for its inaugural issue and contributed more to it than any other artist. He devised the magazine's symbol and specialized in producing the major cartoon for the front cover each week. He was at his satirical best when he portrayed irate Junkers, the over-stuffed Prussian military and God-fearing patriots in loud suits. Later, he became one of Germany's most outspoken critics of the Nazi party and produced numerous drawings ridiculing Hitler and fascist propaganda. Thus it was not surprising that when the Nazi regime gained power in 1933, Thomas Theodore Heine was forced to flee the country. He eventually found a safe haven in neutral Sweden. On his way there he was interrogated by the Gestapo: "'Were you a Socialist or a Communist in Germany?' they asked. 'Impressionist,' Heine replied." *

In his famous satirical art, Thomas Theodore Heine most often used broad washes of colours and powerfully defined characters within a deliberately flattened space. One scholar relates,

"His caricatures, generally works of political and social comment rather than single portraits, were in a clear linear style ahead of its time." **

From the many reproductions I have seen of his art, I have little doubt that this original drawing comes from the hand of Thomas Theodore Heine. Note, in particular, the firm modeling of gestural elements and the superb ability to capture expression -- these are trademarks of Heine's art.

Unfortunately for some unknown reason this magnificent drawing was never completed. Perhaps some sudden change took place with one of the three political figures represented. Therefore the hands of the central, scowling figure are only sketched in pencil and colour washes are yet to be applied to the remaining half of the composition. Thomas Theodore Heine would only sign the drawing with his characteristic 'TTH' monogram after the piece was finished. Yet Discussing the Fate of Germany (note the map in the background!) is clearly a most brilliant drawing and represents of best qualities of early twentieth century German satirical art.
Provenance: From the Munich gallery of Rudolf Aurich and bearing his stamp on the former backing of this drawing, which is now affixed to the verso of this frame. Also bearing hand-writing on this former backing in the upper corner in which I can only partially discern the date of 'Febr. 1924' and the word, 'Professor'. I assume this is the name of the individual who purchased the drawing from the Aurich Gallery.
