Saint Marke

William Faithorne's "St. Marke" (St. Mark) is an original 17th century engraving. In 1653 Faithorne was commissioned to produce ten engravings to illustrate Jeremy Taylor's religious book, "The Great Exemplar of Sanctity and Holy Life According to the Christian Institution". This work went through at least four editions. This impression of "St. Mark" was printed before the 1692 edition when the title of the work was altered to "Antiquities Christianea", and the publisher became Luke Meredith.

The caption for this biblical engraving reads, "'Saint Marke': Markes Lion as his Gospell doth beginne, A Criers Voice the wildernes within, Make straight his pathes; this Same is onely hee of IVDAH'S tribe who was fortold to bee,..."

Note:	Before William Faithorne the most talented artist engravers working in England were imported from the Continent. English engraving and etching had lagged far behind the artistic endeavors of other European countries. William Faithorne's powerfully engraved art would in a single stroke eliminate this imbalance.
	William Faithorne studied painting and engraving in London under Robert Peake. Peake was a staunch supporter of the ill fated King Charles the First and, when Civil War broke out, both Faithorne and his master offered their services to the King. William Faithorne was a member of the Royal Garrison and fought at the siege of Basing House (1643-1645). After the surrender he was imprisoned but was released two years later at the insistence of his friends but on the condition that he leave the country. For the following three years Faithorne lived and worked in Paris where he became acquainted with the greatest of French engravers, Robert Nanteuil. His contact with Nanteuil and Paris’s other great masters of portrait engraving enabled him to develop and refine his own techniques.
	In 1650 William Faithorne was granted a reprieve from his exile. He returned to London and began a successful career as both a leading engraver and a printseller. With the exception of a handful of late portraits he retired from his profession around 1680.
	William Faithorne rightly dominates English 17th century engraving. Some of his famous portraits are among the best in the history of the art of engraving. His engraved illustrations for "The Great Exemplar" are among only a handful of works he created outside the genre of portraiture. Yet his talent at depicting "St. Marke" with his usual attributes of the winged lion, his Gospel and pen, is the mark of a master.

Condition:	Printed on seventeenth century laid paper and backed onto another sheet of paper by a previous owner. Trimmed to the margins on three sides and cropped about one quarter of an inch into the left margin. Containing the vertical fold-out crease, as usual. Apart from several slight stains this is a strongly printed, early impression and in fair condition throughout. "Saint Marke" represents a fine, original example of the famous seventeenth century art of William Faithorne. Note: The British Museum, London, lists an impression of William Faithorne's "Saint Marke" in its permanent collection. It may be viewed on line under its inventory # AN502465001.
