Marine

Gaston de Latenay's original etching, "Marine" is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published by The Print Connoisseur in April of 1924. It is signed in the plate by the artist to the lower left. "Marine" is a fine, original example of the landscape and marine art created by the French artist, Gaston de Latenay.

Title: Marine
Artist: De Latenay, Gaston (Toulouse, 1859 - Paris 1943)
Date: 1924
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: The Print Connoisseur, New York
Note: Gaston de Latenay: A great French painter, lithographer and etcher, Gaston de Latenay studied briefly at the Academie Julian, Paris, but was mostly self-taught. During his long and successful career, de Latenay stood apart from all movements and schools of artistic thought to develop his own poetic vision of nature. Many Impressionist artists, however, were influenced by his remarkable studies of light-effects, particularly in his marine compositions.
Gaston de Latenay's art won awards at the Universal Expositions of 1886, 1889 and 1900. By this time his etchings, were published by the influential Paris publisher, Edmond Sagot. De Latenay was a full member of both the Societe des Artistes Francais and the Societe des Aquarellistes Francais. Many of his fine landscapes and coastal views depicted scenes in Brittany, Artois and Belgium.
Source: The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, John Taylor Arms, Frank Benson, George Wales, Paul Honore, Samuel Chamberlain, Birger Sandzen, Lynd Ward, J. W. Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings, linocuts and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
The work of contemporary French artists also played a large role in the publication. Articles on and original etchings and wood engravings by such French artists as Paul Mathey, Georges Gobo, Pierre Gusman, Gaston de Latenay, Louis Godefroy and Jacques Beltrand were commissioned during this decade.
In the April, 1924 number of The Print Connoisseur de Latenay's graphic art was the subject of an illustrated article entitled, "Check List of the Etchings of Gerard de Latenay". The original etching, Marine, was commissioned as a frontispiece to this number.
